"Bodypop" by And One is kind of like "Music for the Masses" by Depeche Mode. Atmosphere-changing, musically diverse, melodic. And very good. Although orthodox fans may feel a bit dissapointed.
"Bodypop" contains many Depeche-like sounds, the ones from the classic period of the Basildon band. One of a kind, easily identified electro sounds with the And One mark reign on this album, altough with varied tempo.
The CD contains two singles: the outstandingly catchy "Military Fashion Show" and a dull ballad "So Klingt Liebe" (in three versions, because it is accompanied by remixes or concert versions of the German trio's hits). Typical And One sounds can be found in rhythmic, marching "Stand The Pain". It seems that the second CD was enclosed especially for more conservative fans. "Bodypop"'s limited edition contains the "Frontfeuer" EP. It sounds more old-school. The best examples are "A Kind of Deutsch", "Steine Sind Steine" and "Rearming Strafbomber", decreasing in speed one by one.
I was suprised by the ballad atmoshpere, which can be found on "Bodypop". Omitting the pop-like "So Klingt Liebe", "The Sound of Believer" and "The Dream" (with parts of "The Love Thieves" melody from Depeche Mode's CD, "Ultra") it's romantic and lyrical, in dark colours of course. "Love You To The End" and the mysteriously ominous "Enjoy The Unknown" are not particularly acrid. An unquestionable pearl is the nostalgic "Sexkeit"…
Instrumental tracks embrace "Bodypop" like a harp. They turn the listener into a romantic through electronic methods. And One's newest CD is a great gift for electro romantics. A cookie for anyone who can answer a simple question: how come does electronic music have romanticism inscribed into its core?
