I met Tadeusz Łuczejko, the man behind Aquavoice, during the Ambient Festival 2011, where he was both an organiser and a performer. Those who recall my report on the event know that I regarded the concert of Łuczejko as one of the brightest and most memorable moments of the festival’s programme, despite all other artists having tried their best to take that place (except Robin Guthrie, who, I gathered, simply did what he had to).
Now, a confession: I am a fool. After all the praise I had given Aquavoice in my report I didn’t bother to check the discography of the artist at all. So in fact, ‘Grey’ is my first contact with an official release from Łuczejko. Colossal mistake. The latest LP from Aquavoice incorporates all that which can, and should, be expected from a good ambient record. Yes, ambient, though the official release note states that ‘Grey’ steps away from its roots for the benefit of post-industrial and experimental sounds, I’m still of the opinion there is a lot of classic, and at times even slightly dark, ambient present. Example? ‘Air Sanctuary’, a tune- essence, which I would pick as my favourite if I were forced to. And I would abhor that, as the whole album is full of sounds absorbing our attention there is no time for playing favourites. The atmosphere of the LP is not the lightest, but still it’s far from the gloom and doom kind some other artists indulge in. Instead, during each listen, my head was being filled with a feeling of curiosity and a drive to explore unknown spaces.
What of the mentioned post-industrial and experiments? Honestly, I have little to support myself on the matter (‘Grey’ being my first Aquavoice album, and all that), but if I were to point you in the right direction it would be tracks 5 and 6. The amount of various sounds relating to the above mentioned styles is most distinctive here. And it fits like a glove. Just another reason to check Aquavoice’s previous releases I suppose.
As I was saying: I’m a fool. Each of the 48 minutes of music filling the ‘Grey’ deserves your full attention. Need more convincing? Look at the atmospheric cover and inside artwork, all made by Tadeusz Łuczejko. Eh, a fool!
