Some time ago, I had the chance to spend some time with a very interesting split by two Polish projects, released under the banner of Beast of Prey. What I have in mind is an experimental two-act piece called "Strefa" (The Zone), created by Dead Factory and Atum. The combination of these two projects, perhaps arranged at random, proved to be a direct hit, as the concept of the disc is definitely worth investigating.
Above all, I have to give a lot of merit to the production of the album, focusing on a very clear and selective sound and the visual part of the release, capable of satisfying those who like to feast their eyes upon art. The very first sounds make you realise that the packaging is not the only thing that deserves attention here. While listening to this LP you can come to very banal conclusions, but they surely will reach the pleasurable core of this release. The first thing you can realise is the incredible atmospherics, lazily seeping through rough industrial cogwheels. The second is the artistic coherence of the two projects, who even thought they hit you with a monolith of sound, do not lose their identity in the process.
Hundreds of words have been used already to describe the trance-like and image-creating values of dark ambient, so I shall not repeat those phrases of praise, adding only that "Strefa" is a very good piece of listening.
I have to admit that I find "Strefa" to be one of the most interesting releases from the Polish market (I am talking about the independent scene, of course) this year. It's worth getting a copy to restore, and later abolish my totally unoriginal opinion. This won't change the fact that speaking/writing about music is like dancing about architecture - one way or the other, it's the impressions that count.
