Two musicians who are operating right at the edge of the alternative music scene, inevitably had to meet each other. Johnathan|Christian band is serving sounds described as dark alternative rock, and it was founded by Johnathan Mooney and Christian Granquist. Their release "Beautiful Hideous" conceals 9 tracks, 1 cover and 2 remixes.
Undoubtedly, artists with their sound introduce into dark, disturbing atmosphere, focusing in their work on contrasts, fear of loneliness, conflicts and death. Things that are repulsive at the first sight, are at the same time attractive, and conversely. There is nothing permanent, finite, which on the one hand allows for keeping listener in uncertainty, on the other hand - gives a whole new field for a musical exploration.
Sounds presented on that album are varied, tinged with melancholy. Among tracks included on this release stands out "I Walk This Earth Alone". It has a wonderful beginning and very intense rhythm, which is significant, because subsequent pieces begin to gradually loose the tempo, becoming more intimate in the reception. Another one worth of distinction is "Before The Dark (Avant que l' ombre)" – the contrabass tones are downright captivating. As if the spirit of the classical music has been given in a modern release. "The Chauffeur" cover, from the repertoire of Duran Duran, is a big surprise. Musicians were able to give it a trademark of their distinctive sound. Both enclosed remixes - "Haunted (Another World Attrition Mix)" and "Beautiful Hideous (Hard On My Sleeve Mix)" are a welcome change to the ear, although they do not surpass their prototypes.
Album from the Johnathan|Christian duo, "Beautiful Hideous" has all those characteristic features of an interesting debut, which make us itch, scratch and be disturbed. It is a record of the clash of different contrasts, supported by selected musical setting and enhanced by warm, intriguing vocals. In the text layer there is a specific, grim echo of luring, quite opposite desires.
