After a really successful debut "Neophyte" Stefan Schoetz and Tino Calus have suggested a new version of "bodywave", namely "Blackguard". German EMB/electro scene is full of good bands so it’s hard to stand out there and keeping a position after another release is quite a challange.
The album is opened by "Init" and straight after there is "Emulate" chich surprises greatly and positively. Proper vocal composition with good background. In my opinion it’s the best piece of this album. The Cure’s cover ‘Cold’ is also interesting, I really like such references to traditional gothic in electronic version. Unfortunately the further we go the more I begin to think that they lack of ideas and dynamics. "Our darkest path" and "Anger Management" can be enjoyed but still there is no dance floor hit. The vocal is ok but monotonous. The guys could think about some diversity and making it harsher. Being objective, unfortunately there is too much melancholy and too little power which are drawbacks of this really good release. However, we can be glad with the lyrics, there is clear progress and maturation of the band. It’s also good that they write their composition in their mother tongue: ""Komplex", "Zu Staub", it’s always a big plus for courage. The synthesizers strengthen lyrical expression.
However, I would like to hear some cold guitar riffs in it, who knows, maybe in the future they will try such influences. It’s hard to talk about burning out here, however clearly they lack some new inspiration. The whole is really good and worth attention but to listen to it often it’s not enough.
Tracklist:
01 Init²
02 Emulate
03 Anger Management
04 Blackguard
05 Komplex
06 Creed
07 Fractured
08 Zu Staub
09 Menacing
10 Outrage
11 Cold
12 Our Darkest Path
13 Scars (Not Just Words)
