By chance, I have again opportunity to deal with the project, of which existence I had no idea. Devil-M are four individuals from Germany, freaking about industrial rock, at least that acclaim official internet sources, while "Revenge..." is their first, big and full work.
That is enough as an introduction, let's move on to the music. "Revenge..." is a conceptual story of a little man named Astharat (seriously, they could make an effort for something more original), who suffers from schizophrenia and kills Eden, his beautiful wife. The idea well used as Sasha Grey’s ass, but well, I think, maybe there is some fresh approach to the subject, both in lyrical as in music. Although those names of the characters, which are a kind of a reference to good and evil, paradise and hell were not sounding good...
I turn in the album and expect musical journey through the dark world. And I get a kind of, because it is really very darkly. Average beats, cool guitar distortion in the background, keyboards spots, once more and once less melodic. To that typical, well used vocal, sometimes whispers, sometimes cries, is not true you know that? When it is melodic (and usually it is) it is darkly to the pain. Seems cool, but while listening I almost fell asleep. Nothing happens, it is one big boredom. Music does not bring absolutely nothing fresh, nothing that a fan of such play has not heard before. After the first 2 tracks I thought – it is just an inept fake of early Front Line Assembly and newer side of Skinny Puppy. But it is going on a little longer and band starts to remember they are from Europe, especially when to the foreground come keyboard melodies. Some themes are almost stolen straight from Clan Of Xymox and KMFDM (guitars play cannot be mistaken). At least so it is heard in the first few songs. In the second half of record, pieces are a bit more "muted", less dynamics, less keyboard melodies in favor of some unspecified beats and play of a guitar’s thing. But there is completely no idea and complementation, when I listen to it I get the impression that group was rushing themselves in the studio, as not to pay few euros more per session. Bland, worn, shallow, uninspired. There is as much freshness in this as in the herring on the desert, especially starting somewhere near the eighth track.
Boring, poorly played and compositionally failed album. It is a pity.
