I do not know what is taking Gary Numan, but it is probably better stuff than from Witkiewicz, because Numan creates better and better musical works. Stepfather of Trent Reznor, Robert Smith and Ronnie Moorings once again showed that he can create something as fresh as transplants and black paint on the hair on his head. "Splinter" is a must for all those who sucked "Pretty Hate Machine" with their mothers’ milk, and Trent should envy Gary such an album.

Music from Numan on each subsequent album is more mature, it is like a good whiskey lying in the oak barrel – it does not deteriorate, but indeed it is ennobled and becomes of a better taste. "Pure" or "Dead Son Rising" were more good but the "Splinter" attracted me to the player for even longer.
Most of the bands that I listen to, softens and burns out from the record to record. Perhaps musicians calm down with time, but I expect from the music  anxiety and energy - definitely it could be its dark side. The album has a lot of dark energy, pleasant to the ear changes of pace and a lot of guitars. Electronic industrial rock sounds in a classic edition.
The strongest point of the album is its balanced level and refinement. There is no question of one or two good tracks to which you want to jump in apart from the rest. The whole is coherent and well thought out. The lyrics are gloomy, existential and bold a little (as the title of the album), in a word they fit to the music.
The best tracks are announcing the album "I Am Dust", "Here in the Black" which begins with a whisper to develop into screamed chorus, "The Calling" interwoven by peaceful classical instruments, calmer "Splinter" - which is well suited for opening of the concert.
But the number one on the record is "Love hurt bleed". Energy, tempo changes, anxiety, and dark electronic sounds! This is what I am looking for in the music.
The end of the album is already calmer, but it does not stand out from the rest and leaves listener with desire to playing it one more time. The only thing that does not fit is the mimic of Gary's face on the cover. He was supposed to be angry but went out bored. Maybe Numan is bored with his life because certainly not with his Splinter.
