It’s uplifting when we devote the best part of our life to passion. Then there’s a great probability that we’ll die happy. That’s why I bow to artists who made it to the new Halotan Records (3) compilation.
Sometimes the work we care about can obscure the impression of the actual thing so much that it’s hard to say whether it’s good or not. We may show it to our friends or strangers, the pattern is always the same – at first, we’re proud, a moment later we hate it form our heart and soul, than we start to fear and… we forget, you can’t get stuck in one place, you’ve got to move on. That’s the right, healthy attitude. To look for new paths, your own way, to try, to experiment, if you fail – the show must go on.
I must admit, I was positively surprised by the content of the album. It’s diverse, but not chaotic – the songs are put in a logic order according to the rule, which enables listening to it without a sudden and unnecessary discord connected with the change of the mood. It’s energetic and rhythmic – just right for a party or a dance floor. I’m sure everyone will find something one particularly likes. The only thing I have minor reservations about is the pronunciation of the English words – in the majority of songs they sound awkwardly, every native speaker would point out how important is the ‘swallowing’ of some sounds. Unfortunately, this is the ability which requires successive work and rarely can be developed without years of listening to the language or via the Internet (it may well be developed thanks to movies – of course, before ACTA comes into force ;)) The music presented in the compilation could manage to make it abroad, if only they could get rid of that awkward Polish accent, like in the pronunciation of ‘time to kill’. It’s nothing personal, I’m speaking about the general tendency. At least in the songs. Take Diorama as an example – during the interview Torben’s English leaves much to be desired but when he sings, especially in the recordings, there’s nothing you can accuse him of. I’m aware that it’s a little early for this stage, but it’s worth paying attention to, if one plans a further career. I refer to the scene of eating noodles – maybe some of you remember the cult movie ‘Miś’ and the airport scene… The lady there had that interesting method, but I advise you not to take it seriously.
The bands with originally growling, unintelligible vocals did their best. Even if someone tried really hard, one cannot accuse them of anything without risking being ridiculed. And Polish lyrics also solve the problem of English pronunciation offhand.
To sum up – the album may turn out to be the obligatory position for every fan of this genre. You never know which of these bands will become famous… So take it while you can!
