You like water? His album is just for you. You hate it? Listen to “The Murky Brine” and you’ll love it. Those who wallow in Neo-folk and Dark Ambient certainly know that project and certainly know it’s a great mixture of Sol Invictus and Sieben plus a bit of Raison D’etre. Matt Howden and Tony Wakeford are two persons known to every single listener of ‘a bit’ darker and ‘a bit’more alternative music. Both men released an enormous number of albums, vinyls, singles, compilations etc – furthermore, they were all kept on a very high level. Now they’ve started collaboration and created a project Hawthorn. Earlier I’ve mentioned water… it’s because generally the texts and the oveal atmosphere of the album is rather… “oceanic’. From time to time we reach land but it doesn’t change the fact that nature is the main motif of “The Murky Brine”. Instruments rather ordinary – mostly bass guitar, cello, guitar and a bit of piano. It doesn’t seem extraordinary, but mixed with voices of Matt and Tony give fantastic effects. One could find those pieces boring if this monotony didn’t balance Hawthorn and make the album a sort of peaceful. In my opinion it’s obligatory to have this one for every fan(atic) of climatic Neo-folk. It’s a great exemplar not only in this genre. It’s a music exemplar.
