Courage, audacity, and revolt will be essential elements of our poetry. These words from Manifesto of Futurism are a very good description of the Leaether Strip’s album entitled Civil Disobedience. This album is full of hate, venom and aggression. All this sounds like ideas cried out during a demonstration, brings to minds association with revolution. The screams being a rebellious act against all that what we see around us. Double CD album starts with Civil Disobedience. This is a powerful track with a strong beat and with a rough male vocal. First words in this composition make a phrase: Show them what you can do which suggests on character not only of this single composition, but of the entire album. Other titles with the same rebellious atmosphere are The Damaged people, Bite until you taste blood, Going nowhere on first CD and on the second A whore for Jesus, Snakebite, In the arms of a demon. Moreover, on the second CD there are tracks where the composer uses dialogues. What the composer makes with the sounds can be observed for example in Could ya did ya. First we can hear a small talk between a woman and a man, then laughter of public, like in sitcoms. Human speech is in a different way used by Larsen in The Devils Daughter. This track begins with words whispered by a woman. Her voice sounds like words spoken by a possessed. Also, we can hear pieces of dialogues in The Cradle of Death, One Day and Going Nowhere.
My favorite tracks are Jagtvej 69, I said I'm sorry, Stains and, the one described earlier, When Blood Runs Dark from EP with the same title (arrangement is changed). Jagtvej 69 is like a surprise – gift. The first seconds are very melodious and calm, than next few seconds are very aggressive with hard beat. And the sound game begins again and again. I have to say that I listened to this composition with huge pleasure. The second, a very nice and a very good track, in my opinion, is Stains. Here we can hear the sound of organ similar to some background music from old horror movies. This music is in contrast to electronic sounds. This element of surprise is nice and amazing for the listener.
The Civil Disobedience album’s limited edition includes a bonus CD One Nine Eight Two. This bonus album was published for the 20th anniversary of Leaether Strip. The CD contains twelve compositions. Among these tracks my favorite titles are: You Don't Look The Same, One Nine Eight Two, Dominatrix and Ego Generation. Two of them, One Nine Eight and Dominatrix, are powerful and, in that way, pleasant to hear. The composer plays with arranged beats and rhythms. He joines it with vocals. The track which is a conceptual link between both CDs of the album is Ego Generation. In this composition Larsen shows a problem of egoism in modern world and in people’s thinking.
All tracks from Civil Disobedience and from One Nine Eight Two are bold, because they take up the controversial issues of untypical behaviour, untypical thinking. I can recommend this album to all the people who need a batch of energy to do something new!
