L'Effet C'Est Moi – Il Sole a Mezzanotte

If someone wants to become familiar with the works of L'Effet C'Est Moi they will find a bizarre definition of music convention, in which Emanuele Buresta creates - martial symphonic. Any attempt to translate and connect the concepts of "war" and "symphonic" will bring consternation. However, I believe that everyone feels what it is.
Oddly enough, still unprecedented convention finds a good and solid rendition. Creator of L'Effet C'Est Moi project consequently keeps the chosen direction, what’s more! He builds it with the use of various performance means. And he does it all alone? It's hard to believe.
In comparison to previous achievements of Emanuele Buresta, the album Il Sole a Mezzanotte, seems far more mature. He gives up raging pathos obtained from synthetic sounds in favor of far profound climate, for example, instead of harsh rhythms - sonic patches. Nevertheless, you can expect from martial symphonic a lot of marches and also here you won’t be let down.
The album starts with the sound of synthetic organs and vocal parts (for the curious: in classical sprechgesang style), bringing to mind the sight of Dracula's castle with its tenants. Second position takes us into the medieval halls of kings, who are entertained by jesters and wandering troubadours. Strong, dry drum line and clean guitars, choral unison parts give the impression of being true, or at least very faithful, to the old music styling.
Third position is similar in character, this time without the female vocals but accompanied by electric guitar and piano. The only thing that spoils the reception of previous experience is slowly starting synthetic violin - there is no worse sound in the history of electronic music. But hey, not everyone has to be a multi-instrumentalist, after all, what matters is the idea and effect.
The fourth proposition on the album, La danza del fuochi, is the essence of what Buresta uses in all his work - climate, sound patches, a flute theme (obviously synthetic), marching rhythms on three separate instruments that change their character in an orderly manner and consistent, walking bass...
Fors fortune is definitely faster, a crowd noise used in the background, sprechgesang, choirs and harp catch the attention! Beautifully used harp, a perfect combination with the omnipresent piano. There is the energy and beauty, keep it up!
The sixth track begins with all well known music box melody combined with sound consonance devoid of classical harmony, this creates a veeery psychedelic effect... This treatment allows to slip unnoticed into the seventh position on the album, Striges. Once again we have psychedelia, this time with vocals - sinister whispers backed by soft organ lines, the sound of storm in the background. Did I say that Emanuele Buresta copes with the climate?
It's time for Il sole mezannotte, from which the album took its title. Saxophone comes to the front, underneath, known to us already "medieval" treatments – fast, clean guitar and rhythms, as usual, quick and marching. This time, however, there are more synthetic strings, although in this song they’re not so irritating for the ears. Vocals in the style already known from the previous tracks, all - built consequently, part by part, layer by layer. There is energy and power - no wonder that the author has chosen exactly this position as a representative.
As for the lyrics - I must admit that knowledge of musical terminology doesn’t really help to grasp the entire text in Italian, but looking at the whole, you can expect that the lyrics keep up to the level.
The remaining three positions are true to the music path chosen by the author - not necessarily surprising us with novelties, because it would create chaos... However, the closure is powerful and somewhat pompous, but for a "goodbye" it’s a pretty good idea.
To sum up – album is full of very good, well thought, intelligent music. It’s not obvious, it’s not secondary... Would it be possible to have a good time at the concert? Absolutely, though maybe without mad moshpit or party until dawn. I recommend this to all who are looking for novelty and like military climates in unusual arrangements - it really works!
