Mona Mur/En Esch – Do With Me What You Want
An album beginning with the words ‘Touch me/ With the tip of your tongue’ cannot be described otherwise than sensual, sexy and rapacious. And even though this is what best characterises the second LP of Mana Mur and En Esch, it is most unfortunate that the atmosphere tends to vanish at times. When it comes to music, on the other hand, the album holds some nice surprises. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The first track we encounter, ‘Touch’, is what best describes the entire album. It’s slow, but not sluggish, with guitar parts hidden just beneath the surface, which only adds to the already mentioned rapaciousness. ‘Eiskalt’, another interesting track, is a mixture of a nice sound of synthesizer with a typical German marching rhythm. ‘Flesh And Blood’ is yet another portion of a slightly perverse atmosphere, which only waits to tear our cloths to shreds (together with some back scratching). ‘Easy Living’ makes for a subdued prelude for more energetic ‘My Life’, which reminds me of KMFDM (member of which En Esch once was). ‘Do With Me What You Want’ still stays true to the atmosphere, adding some dark elements to its colours and with keyboards, which I tend to associate with Type O Negative, but cut me in half, I can’t give you a reason why. Next in line is ‘Guilty’ with its lazy, almost trip-hop-like rhythm and acoustic guitar, which takes me to Spain or any other Spain-like country. ‘Justice’ makes for the biggest surprise on the album. Very dynamic, very drum and bass-like, with rebellious vocals of Mona Mur, which only adds spice to the whole track. And the last minute of the tune? Pure industrial rock. On the contrary, ‘Le Weltanschauung’ does not reach me at all. The atmosphere changes completely, and it sounds like a disco hit, which I truly despise.
The album ends with lacklustre ‘Part Again’ and a familiar looking ‘Do Widzenia’ and that is all the duo has prepared for us. Apart from the above mentioned exceptions, the album can be surely placed under the ‘industrial’ tag. The biggest pain though, is the radical change of the initial atmosphere, which made me think whether the composers ran out of ideas at some point. Then again it seems quite improbable. More’s the pity, as we all like to be scratched at our backs from time to time, don’t we?
