"And All That Could Have Been" is a document of the Fragility Tour 2.0 from 2000. Compared to the CD edition released at the same time, the DVD has three more songs: "La Mer", "Complication" and "Just Like You Imagined". The double DVD set presents Nine Inch Nails in a classic line-up with Robin Finck, Charlie Clouser and Danny Lohner. The band plays their all biggest hits along with then promoted material from "The Fragile". The older tracks are presented from a new perspective – this version of "Terrible Lie" is a lot wilder than original, "Sin" was enriched with the intriguing sound of theremin (watching Charlie Clouser while he plays on this weird instrument is pure pleasure), also the mixture of "March of the Pigs" and "Piggy" is very interesting. The latter one was played in a more swingy way and we can also experience the atmosphere of a NIN concert, when Trent comes down to the public and suddenly gives his microphone to the fans, so the last verses "nothing can stop me now" are sang by excited NIN lovers. Tracks from then newest longplay, the brilliant "The Fragile", are also performed in slightly changed arrangements – the studio versions are multilayered and it would be impossible to play them in that way live. "The Wretched" and "Starfuckers, Inc." are heavier than the originals, "The Great Below" touches even deeper in it’s live version and "The Mark Has Been Made" has been more improvised, so we can hear for example a new part with Trent shouting, which doesn’t appear in the studio version. Thanks to all this operations, we can hear all the well-known songs in a new way. It’s also important to say, that – opposite to what Trent Reznor currently says – his band sounded awesome back in those days and nothing bad can be said about the performance. The whole material was edited from recordings of many shows, so we can often see some changes in the way how the musicians look like or even notice the sky above the scene, while the major part shows performances from roofed areas. Musically all is very well mixed, so we don’t notice all those differences and the visuals and lights also sidetrack. Nine Inch Nails is known for it’s carefully created image, so it’s no wonder that we can definitely call this performance a work of art. All the recordings were made by the band itself during the tour. After every show all members were watching the material and discussed it. Trent Reznor and Rob Sheridan produced the final product, so it’s dark and smoky and perfectly shows how a Nine Inch Nails gig looks like. As a result of Reznor’s mix, the whole audio part sounds great in 5.1 Dolby Digital and 5.1 DTS (unfortunately, the two versions are sold separately). Besides the main concert part, we also get an opportunity to watch "La Mer", "The Great Below" and "The Mark Has Been Made" from a different angle (so we can watch carefully the visualizations) along with Bill Violas commentary about those three tracks. It’s not much for a two DVD set, especially when we compare it to the five years younger "Beside You In Time" where we get a similar gig, special features as much again and all of this was released on just one DVD.. But the penetrating fans will also find a lot of easter eggs and that states for: commercials, live version of "Reptile", two tracks performed with Marilyn Manson ("Starfuckers, Inc." and "The Beautiful People") and the most important thing – the unfinished video for "The Day The World Went Away" mixed with it’s live performance. To complete happiness it only lacks a collection of "The Fragile" era videos, which aren’t available on any official release up to present day. The whole set was released in a stylish digipack with slipcase – it’s a pleasure just to hold it in hands. "And All That Could Have Been" is an awesome gig and every NIN lover should know it. The non-lovers should get it too, it can be the first step to a big love – for what I can be the best example myself.
