Reizstrom - Interferenz
First thing that can be said about Reizstrom’s new release is the undeniable fact that the album is coherent and perfectly balanced. We can find everything here – hard beats, softer sounds, building tension, "dry" and melodious vocals... Despite the multitude of used performance means they all create an indivisible whole. It’s hard to find a single song standing out from any other so usually the notes will be alike – some may find the album mediocre, others good. As always – it’s a question of taste and I encourage to make up your own mind.
Honestly, I have to admit that I’m surprised with musicians’ choice of I Will Believe as the first track. From the music side it’s the least "perfect" from all the proposed compositions – dirty harmony that hurts the ears... but maybe there’s a method in this madness? Anyway, the song is catchy, often I caught myself humming it. The accumulation of electronic layers in the second part of the song reduces poor impressions that appeared after the intro, false notes fade away and later on it gets only better.
The real fun starts with Fernlicht, a track in German. The most mature music solutions are visible here – a lot of electronic layers, carrying beat, wonderful energy. The singer is not going crazy with vocal range, however, in this song it doesn’t seem necessary. There’s more of it in the next song, Invisible Force, that is one of the most melodic tracks on the album, left without the usual synth-pop excessive optimism at the same time. Noticeable amount of low beats prevents from that with great success. In addition, a duet in the second part of the song is nice in listening.
Compromise as well as Winners and Losers may remind of a heavier Diorama – a lot of fresh beat, nice melody, good lyrics. It’s really not a bad song.
Another German track... I can’t get over how perfectly the language fits such convention. Tausend Augen is a very climatic, calm and melodic song – it would be hard to change even a single note there, it’s just in the place where it was needed and sounds just as it should. Briefly – perfect.
Waking Up Normal – we’re back to what we’ve already heard. The energy, melody and lyrics are back. Two following don’t bring anything new because... they absolutely don’t have to. It’s consistent and coherent and that’s really important.
When it comes to lyrics on one should feel offended. They’re not duplicated, every one carries a different message at the same time consistently maintaining the assumed convention. I’ll add secretly that I’m rating only English stuff, I don’t really sympathize with German language – but it works faultlessly like it does usually with electro (tracks 3, 7). I believe that it’ll work here as well.
What can I say at the end... in general, they fulfilled their task. They recorded a very good album. However, I can’t help feeling that’s it’s a bit below their potential... maybe the recording company put pressure on them, maybe they lacked faith in their strength – but Reizstrom repeats steps known for a long time and taken by countless artists. They didn’t pull through too many original ideas... but did they have to?
Not necessarily. If the album sounds like that it means it was to sound like that. And it’s always good.
