The Last Hour is a band which exists from 2004. It’s the solo project of an ex-member of Gothica, Robert Del Vecchio. The Last Hour came into being after the Italian band – Gothica split. Gothica was a band which created darkwave music as well as ghotic and dark ambient, mixed with electronic music and ethereal vocals of Alessandra Santovito.
As a fervent fan of darkwave music, I should go into raptures after hearing this album, but the reality is different. After hearing the CD for the first time, I honestly had some problems with telling anything about the album. Certainly, the album is extremely melodious and gloomy, but it’s not enough to listen to it only once. You have to hear it a couple of times and focus on it carefully in order to discover what Del Vecchio wants to convey through his music. Despite the fact, that the album follows gloomy conventions it attracts a lot. The fact is that, Del Vecchio’s music is not easy but it’s quite the opposite. However, there are also such elements, which break the somber atmosphere thus making the album more accessible to those who do not listen to such music quite often. "The Last Hour" is an even dose of both darkness and gloom (here appears also Del Vecchio’s voice) as well as guitar solos and modern electronica. The CD is not a dynamic one. The album is very atmospheric, even a little bit romantic, remaining at the same time depressive (what is extremely characteristic of gothic music). Thanks to skillful combination of all those elements, it makes an impression on the listener. “New Dawn Fades", really melodious and a bit surprising work, that differs from the remaining 9 songs of the album, is definitely my number one. It sounds rather like a rock song thanks to guitar solos, but stll I like it very much. The rest of the songs is not worse at all. After a little depressing "Into Empty Hour", appear excellent soundtrack-like: "Waiting for the Rain To Fall” and "Death In Venice”. Really atmospheric mood is presented in "Feelings" and "Chanson D’Automne" – which is the only song on this album where we can hear female voice. I heave read somewhere that the cd reminds the music of such bands as: Diary of Dreams, Dead Can Dance, Clan of Xymox etc. Honestly speaking, I don’t fully agree with it. But even if is true that Del Vecchio draws on the music of those bands, I’m ok with it in this case.
I think, that The Last Hour is fairly good and certainly it’s worth listening to. I recommend it, especially as the release date is 10th XII, 2008.
