Uniqplan - Wilderness
The debut album of this Warsaw band is by all means a genuine article. They didn’t only stay clear of the faux pas zone but achieved an impressively good outcome too. The way it sounds signifies fervent attempts to catch up with the big league bands. The top-notch arrangement and production really make this an effortless pleasure to the ear. It will especially satisfy those who have a soft spot in their hearts for anything that music had to offer electronic-wise two or three decades ago.
Although Wilderness is mostly electronic, a term "synthetic with inclinations to rock" would better fit the definition of the album. There are tons of killers on it and recording them seems to be surprisingly easy for the band. Speaking of the lyrical side I really can’t find any fault with them being written in English, though verbalization could use some improvement. The vocalist’s voice sometimes seems too strident and the phrases too exaggerated. All in all, it’s the only glitch of this material. Tracks like Wilderness, Not Synthetic, This Make Sense or Love Radiation will surely attract like a magnet all those who long for the eighties. They are so tuneful that makes you think you heard them before and are likely to quickly etch in your memory too. There is also a place for more challenging pieces like Even If or the album ender Wunderlust - both played with a mysterious, electro-psychedelic flair. What’s worth pointing out is that the album doesn’t strike as extremely depressing or dark but still holds a tinge of melancholy so characteristic of anything that comes with a tag "indie" attached to it.
In summary, this is a worthy album, which revived my waning hope in our local bands (I’ll pretend the insipid Fairy Tale isn’t there) Depeche Mode? New Order? The influence is evident, but is it a lapse in creativity? Not exactly. This only shows where their music is rooted and precisely defines the path they want to follow. Bravo
