If you’re familiar with the bands Cyanotic or Rabbit Junk, you should also recognise the name Glitch Mode, the record company under which the above mentioned bands operate. Among this respectable lot there appeared a new project called WaXaW, a brainchild of Dru Brozovitch, who has just released his first CD, which gave me an opportunity to review it.

To be exact, ‘Revenge Themes’ is a five-piece EP of industrial/electronic metal with a twist, but let’s leave that for later. The music coming from the speakers is quite specific, as from the very first seconds of ‘Hateache/Revenge Themes’ one can feel the atmosphere of the 90s, which is good of course. Nowadays when bands seem to think that having a keyboard player makes them industrial, WaXaW brings a glimpse of hope to the genre. But I digress. As usualy in case of metal, the tunes on Brzovitch’s EP are quite aggressive, but are not stripped of melody, which makes the music more than just a collection of noises. A proper use of electronics leaves no place for doubts when considering genre. However, as always in case of debut releases, there are some ‘glitches’. First of all: the production. The tunes sound flat, mainly due to poor rhythm section. What ‘Revenge Themes’ lacks is a fat bass that would certainly add some spice to the music. Another matter is the vocal of Brozovitch. It’s not a tragedy, but its not above average either. Regardless of distortion usage, the vocals sound weak, which I hope will change in the future. And now, the promised twist. The last tune on the EP is an instrumental track that would fit perfectly on a dark/industrial ambient album. It makes me think whether WaXaW should reorient itself from metal to ambient. Good stuff.

Ultimately, Brozovitch did not reinvent the wheel, but does have potential, if only the production and vocals improve. ‘Revenge Themes’ is a solid release and I recommend giving it a chance, especially as the EP is available for free on Glitch Mode’s website.
