Cat Rapes Dog - Life Was Sweet
With the Cat Rapes Dog band I met by chance, while looking for new sounds.
Scrolling through the tracks, I came across something that stopped me and make me wonder - namely the "motordead" piece, which I would classify to a nice blend of ebm and synth punk. It sounds explosively and so it is. Each successive track from them was intriguing and interesting. I admit that at the beginning liking of the band was not obvious, but with every sound I was more convinced for a plus to the band. So I waited impatiently for the new album, and unfortunately I was not so positively surprised.
"Life Was Sweet" is a quite consistent album - and perhaps it is too consistent. At some pieces it is hard to hear that the song changes. Everything seems to be recorded in the so called "one pattern", or at least nothing surprises. Sounds are too predictable.
I also have some reservations to the female vocals, scrolling through the entire album, they are easily associated with typical Japanese - and this is not an easily digestible case for everyone.
However, you cannot criticize only this album (it has two musical pluses) - the first track "God Hates Christians" is ear catching.
The second piece, which stops in the head for longer is the "River of Pain" (for me synth punk), where the idea for female vocal fits perfectly and defends. These pieces can be definitely recommended for hearing, which by the way will clearly show the sound of the album and will help to decide whether it is worthy.
The band was formed in 1984 so you cannot blame them for the desire to experiment and to test new sounds, because they did not resigned from the mainstream, which they are loyal for years. But those trials of having fun and variations with synth punk and ebm - on my part – were unfortunately not very successful. What remains is to wait for their next move.
