When in 2006 The Beauty of Gemina debuted with brilliant album Diary of a Lost many probably have thought: can the band create anything more excellent? When the second publication A stranger to light came to light the band seemed to have reached the peak of their capabilities. At the end of the sea proved that Michael Sele’s band still climbs to the top of virtuosity. And when it seemed that the Swiss trio won’t surprise us any more and that the new album will at the most keep the high standard, Iscariot Blues appeared.
Not for the first time Sele tries to tell a story with his music. This time the plot comprises of ten unique, well-considered compositions. The first surprise – the fourth album is the shortest so far. It begins with soft, almost nostalgic Voice of winter. It seduces and surprises, especially with vocals - unusually soft for Sele. The quiet intro turns into more energetic, 80’s style Haddon Hall. The following two songs deserve special attention: blues Badlands and lively Golden Age – both prove that the band is still experimenting. The up to now prevailing lightness is broken by Stairs – the milestone of Iscariot Blues. The composition is melancholic, existentially, ethically, almost politically involved. Next songs are reminiscent of the rougher sound known from previous albums. The compositions become heavier, Sele’s vocals are darker and thundering, guitars are sharper and the bass line is deepened. Prophecy – sinister composition with strong guitar parts juxtaposed with industrial elements. Eventually Dark Revolution – my personal favorite. A slightly blues, absolutely dark, cold wave composition. June 2nd is a fresh, music reflection, interwoven with swaying guitars and vocals similar to Stairs, especially in the refrain. The last but one Seven-day wonder stands out the most. Characteristic riff, very dynamic pace and catchy refrain – a real gem. And finally Last night home – the most successful comeback to the 80’s sound.
It must be emphasized: Iscariot Blues is a polyphonic, elaborate and very mature album. It is probably the most diversified and daring achievement of The Beauty of Gemina. As for music - it’s a next step to perfection. When it comes to lyrics – it’s deep and open to interpretation. The melancholic order permeates the album. Each song has its specific place, there aren’t any superfluous or added by force compositions. The album is complete, but it leaves us curious and wanting more. I suppose, this is the only disadvantage. If you want to witness the development of the rising star of independent music – I recommend it to you.
