In 2000 a record by MDFMK, a project that was merely an averagely-camouflaged KMFDM, saw the light of day. The album was permeated with all the best KMFDM has to offer, that is a truly atmospheric industrial rock. Later, it was even better (along with a come back to the old name); subsequent records proved the good condition of Mr. Konietzko, who, notabene, has been dealing with music for quite some time now. However, as it usually happens in life, everyone has his/her ups and downs, which was clearly noticeable in the latest release of KMFDM, "Blitz". I am not sure if it was caused by a multitude of side projects of Kapt’n K, among which he divides his creative potential, but the fact is that ‘WTF?!’ constitutes a very average record.
First and foremost, the album lacks that certain earthquake in the form of an introductory track, which was so typical of the previous releases (the above-mentioned ‘Blitz’ excluded). In comparison to, for instance, ‘Free Your Hate’ off ‘Hau Ruck’, ‘Krank’ turns out merely banal. Fortunately, it gets better, as the album contents unravels; in ‘Come On – Go Off’ a rebellious spirit of KMFDM can be noticed, similarly in the record’s highlight, that is ‘Rebels in Control’. Lucia is showing her teeth, which works just right, as such a rebellious countenance suits her best. Unluckily, after that very piece, boredom creeps in gradually. ‘Lynch Mob’ leaves no impression, while ‘Take It Like a Man’ simply makes you think it was composed solely with a view to being a hit on charts (sic!).
‘Panzerfaust’, which may be classified as ‘a track sung in a language other than English or German’, is only a shadow of similar tracks from the previous albums. ‘Dystopia’ and ‘Spectre’ may serve as a solace and appeal to some tastes, yet not necessarily.
And that is what this record is actually like, one can listen to it, but not obligatorily. It is much better to get back to ‘Nihil’ or ‘WWIII’ and hope that in the future Sascha K. will find a little bit more time to come up with something more interesting than the contents of the record, ironically entitled, ‘WTF?!’
Tracklist:
01. Krank
02. Come On - Go Off
03. Rebels In Kontrol
04. Lynchmob
05. Take It Like A Man
06. Viva La Mort
07. Dystopia
08. Panzerfaust
09. Spectre
10. Amnesia
11. Death & Burial Of C. R.
