Elements 4AD... – Where?
„Elements of silence" is the second studio album of the Norwegian group which has existed about six years. Pride And Fall. You can hear they're from Norway. Music from the speakers is Scandinavian cool…
Surely, for promotional and commercial reasons Pride And Fall were called children of 4AD, praised for the style of the latest album and compared to bands such as Clan of Xymox, Cocteau Twins or Dead can dance (sick!).
First track actually recalls the sound of the legendary label and achievements of artists who recorded albums under its wings. Still, it recalls it only for a moment because after about three minutes of intro listener (prepared for 4AD) hears the cascade of "Retrospect" sounds and the charm is gone. Boring "Sacrament" and monotonous "Pathogen". Faster songs are better…because they seem to last shorter. Yet even the title song of the album turns out to be unnecessary long one without the idea. For Norwegians instrumental backgrounds are not elements connecting album bur are rather the gap to "play a little bit quietly" i.e. the title elements of silence. The hope (in me) for the future of Pride And Fall (and for me) sparkles in the last but one song. Perhaps identity of the title with the name of one band made "the Perfect Circle" a nice surprise.
Yet the vocal is still drily. Voice of Sigve Monsen (somehow I don't believe him) assimilates with monotonous electro-industrial beat of Pride And Fall music. The use of decorative keyboards and choirs brings Norwegians nearer to accomplishments of British VNV Nation. The vocal difference is also not that big. With the exception of crude Norwegian accent which is not unnoticed.
I don't understand some people's fascination by the latest "child" of Pride And Fall. But – as my mama says – I don't have to understand everything. Taste is not to be discussed. Delight neither. Yet those who are charmed by PAF music are as well happy to hear that at 28th of July the band will play at Castle Party Festival in Bolkow.
P.S. *- the answer is: in the silence of the album. (Correct answer allows 4AD fans not to listen to "Elements of Silence"…).
