Avotor is quite an unusual project from New Zealand, halfway between industrial rock and electro-industrial, although the form is rather unexpected. We have real drums, guitars, bass and keyboards here, but they're all channelled through an array of effects and distortions, finally mixed with a few "strange" samples. Unfortunately, the whole suffers from an overload of form over a lack of content, and might be tedious for the listener. The record contains 8 tracks. The first one, "Before The Eclipse", is an interesting introduction and a good presentation of the style we encounter later. It is worth remarking that Avotor is a strictly instrumental project. I haven't heard a single word during the listening. The music is psychodelic, drums keeping a steady rhythm, everything is soaked with noises and low murmuring bassline with guitar moans piercing from below. The next few tracks are rather boring, letting the mind turn off and the thoughts drift away. "Impass" and "Solar Blizzard" are a wake-up call, being by far the best tracks of the album. Thanks to them I've reached the conclusion that even though Avotor's music is absolutely out of question when it comes to partying, and might be heavy while listening at home, it would make a great soundtrack to a horror movie or a psychodelic computer game. All in all, only three out of eight tracks are memorable, making the whole merely mediocre. It's not bad, but the music is too homogeneous.
