Ruined portrait is the newest proposition presented by Cynical Existence, Frederik Croona, also known from band Project Rotten, project. It is second promo released by an artist, earlier we had a chance to get familiar with A Familiar Kind of Pain (review available here:
What we can expect this time? For sure author’s compositions, all of them kept in characteristic, darkly-hateful atmosphere. Every track seems to be very personal, full of pure, simple anger’s emotions. It can be seen in the lyrics also - almost all of them talk about fight against other man and evil, that he had done, and which demands vengeance for committed wrongs.
First track, Misery, leads us into atmosphere consenquently shown from first to last sound. It’s dark and aggressive, but suprisingly gently - music doesn’t overwhelm us with its weight, instead suggests regular, sometimes almost dance rhythms. Am I Alive starts with pleasent sound of a piano, soon it turns into well known, dark bits. My shining halo suprises with interesting rhytm-metrical solutions, and Lets play dead created toghether with Reactor 7x defends pleasent melody. Face of God is the longest proposition on the album and also quintessence of style that author uses, similarly like Insecure and Paradox. Everything is kept in immutable, heavy and overwhelmed with not very positive emotions atmosphere.
Ruined Portrait is the proposition for EBM and aggrotech fans, that like to caress the ears with well composed eletro layers. The only thing that you can regret is duration time - only seven tracks is too less to enjoy... If combine both albums time spent on listening to them, for sure won’t be wasted. But oh well, this is the charm of EPs:)

JM: Welcome, Fredrik. We are pleased to have you with us.
FC: Glad to do this.
JM: Could you tell us, why 'Cynical' Existence? I know it seems to be obvious because of the lyrics, but I would like to hear more about this.
FC: The name? Well, it sounded good in my head and I've always been a bit of a cynical person. So it’s kind of made sense to use it.
JM: So the lyrics, if we're here - is it the message for the world you liked to scream as kind of Messiah or it is for you, the things that touched you?
FC: (Laugh) No, there is nothing religious behind my lyrics. I just write about things personal to me and about past experiences.
Things that mean something.
JM: Of course. And the inspiration, from where do you take it? Other bands, maybe philosophers, writers... or poets?
FC: Mostly myself, but I'm also influenced by people around me and happenings. Of course music also inspires me to create and even video games. There are so many things that get your mind worked up and trigger my inspiration.
JM: Video games! That’s interesting! Which one, if I can ask?
FC: Well, for instance the song "Am I alive" is loosely based on the old PC game called "Blood", which is one of my all time favorite games, even the samples are from the game...
JM: And why EBM & aggrotech? I know that with your other project, Project Rotten, you play that kind of music... but aren't you interesting with other forms of music expression?
FC: I like to create this type of music, mainly because I feel comfortable making it. I've tried to experiment a bit and infuse my music with elements from other genres, but this is what I like to do. This is also the first time I make everything on my own so it’s more special for me.
JM: So take my best wishes for the rest of your career! I hope to see you in Szczecin 2013.
FC: I will keep you updated!
