I readily admit that I’ve been waiting for the new release of this British group ever since I had been struck by sheer power and energy blaring from loudspeakers at the duo’s astonishing performance at "Antyscena" in autumn. From then on I kept a close watch on Ryan and Kaysha’s proceedings and finally time has come for a full length LP to see the light of day.
It leads off with an intro track ‘Alone’ - a jarring set being a predecessor to something so powerful as to delight even the most fussy admirers of rhythm ’n’ noise genre. The cut smoothly proceeds to ‘Maschine Music’, slow-going and rhythmical, whetting the appetite for more. Irregular pace is set to establish the composition’s entrancing mood thus proving a slower tempo does not have to be necessarily dull and lead to listeners’ drowsing off. Next down the list ‘Broken Storm [End] sets off unusually calm and evokes some post-apocalyptic imagery. However, it is not Dirty K’s purpose (and a definite plus for that) to treat us with tranquilized soundscapes for too long - promptly after a stream of energy surges on while the pace gets quicker, some brilliant broken rhythms to boot and something we’ve been waiting for a long time now comes into existence.
Nevertheless we are still on the journey’s outset for the ‘Cataclysm’ ensues. Beginning with nice samples, carrying even a greater charge of energy and seeming chaos, thus ‘masterpiece’ is nothing but the best word to describe it. Since the force of this track is simply overwhelming, I recommend it to everyone, not only noise music fans. This absolute cataclysm is followed by ‘Disturbing Thoughts’ – more sedated yet not a bit weaker when it comes to technique, letting us few moments to ease our breath, not sufficient though.
Shifting tempo and a characteristic "mechanical grind" sticks tightly to the back of your head making it impossible to set your mind to rest completely. We champ at the bit to hear the next and get rewarded with the ‘Nightmares Of A Tormented Mind’. The track starts off with a sample, which turns into a forcible beat. Broken rhythm cheerfully brings about a soothing effect to our ears and make us hungry for more, especially that next comes ‘Something Dark’, which has already had its chance to win our favor since the fan-made video to it was published. Being an excellent forerunner to the LP it made me sit on pins & needles waiting for the latter to be released. Powerful and engraving into one’s memory with pace slowdowns. I am impatiently looking forward to check how it sounds on amplified loudspeakers, since it’s no use listening to it at low sound volume – great cut, however it’s not my favorite on the album. Next in line is ‘Smog Blanket (Torrent Version)’, introducing some tranquility but in the vein of Dirty K - easier yet not at all soporific.
A moment of relaxation before the remainder of trip into Brits’ music ends quickly with our ears being deluged with the tones of – ‘Scattered Elements’. It’s much calmer than its predecessor but likewise lacks for nothing. Technical topnotch and catchy, just like the subsequent and at the same time title track – ‘Torrent Of Fury’
Choosing this particular for the title track definitely hit the mark, it’s bursting with energy and way faster than the two preceding compositions. It’s something worth waiting for and listening it through makes you thirst for more. Shifting tempo makes the risk of boredom practically void while the magnitude of sounds overwhelms the listener, pleasantly though.
‘ Frequent Thoughts Of Violence’ is the penultimate track, wherein jarring sounds and samples turn into an energetic tune with a good capability to surprise the listener - simple but easy on the ear. Finally we come to, as one might say, the icing on the cake. ‘Gutterpump’ seems to be the ideal track to top off the album – its tranquility and energy converged in a finite composition.
In a nutshell, I can think of only one word that perfectly defines the impression ‘Torrent Of Fury’ has made on me – brilliant. Long time have I been waiting for an album like this, exceptionally diverse yet cohesive, full of rhythm and energy perceptible in every composition. I highly recommend it to every fan of noise music and not only – It might be a flying start into the world of such music.
