Lia Fail (Irish for 'Stone of Destiny') is a neofolk band from Bologna, Italy. This ensemble, consisting of five musicians, recently released their first album Cynical Stones. They reference known acts, such as Sol Invictus, Dead Can Dance, Death in June as their inspiration. Since I was never disappointed by new wave bands from Italy and appreciate neofolk a lot, I wanted to take a closer look on what Lia Fail has to offer.
Cynical Stones contains ten nicely arranged songs. Female and male vocals appear alternating and indeed remind of Dead Can Dance, audible in the songs 'Like a Star' and 'Lost in the Wind'.
On tracks like 'Leipzig' and 'In this Square' the neofolk aspects are more salient. 'Leipzig' sounds like a song on Death in June's The Guilty Have no Pride.
The highlight on Cynical Stones would be in my opinion 'Just a Breath'. A good song, which reminds of Morrissey (in a good way). Or even Echo & the Bunnymen with some classical instruments like violins and flutes and such. I mean, just listen to the guitar. Also the song seems quite upbeat - it almost rocks.
It is interesting to hear also some female vocals in the else male-dominated genre of neofolk. Lia Fail make nice music with many influences, but exactly these may, like many other bands, hinder them on their way of developing an own unique style. Anyway, Cynical Stones is a good start.
