New Zero God is a Greek band, founded in 2006, playing music from the borderland of post punk, gothic rock and classical rock. The band consists of: on vocal Mike Pougounas, guitar Averkios Hadjiantoniadis (ex members of Flowers Of Romance), Costas Spanos on bass guitar, and Dimitris "Sidheog" Steves on drums (both played together with Pougounas in his previous band Nexus). Fun Is A Four Letter Word is a debut album, released by label Puzzlemusik in February 2010.
This time I will start from the end – I do like the record, very much sometimes. While this I am extremely positively surprised with the fact that New Zero God comes from Greece, and sounds like purebred, professional British band. Fun Is A Four Letter Word is an album extracting from very good musical sources – listening to it brings to mind such bands like The Cult, with rock, energetic pieces, and also Ikon, with some darker atmoshere, more gothic. These similarities appear both in music and vocals, so I recommend this record especially to the fans of such sounds.
This CD, despite being consistent in sound, contains quite differential songs. The first one Bang Bang with very energetic, punk-rock sound, associates in my mind with the works of New Model Army. This is not the end of comparisons – more peaceful, however intriguing Kiss The Witch brought to my mind Edwin Collins, especially as the song is unusually catchy and would surely be suitable to be played in radio stations. On the contr ary, Pain Called Pleasure with distorted voice of the vocalist, distressing and much more complicated, revealed the band’s openness to musical experiments. Afterwards there come two gothic accents – "sisterslike" sounding Dead Inside and very well done Lap Of The Universe.
I am surprised with the choice of the sixth song for the title one. Fun Is A Four Letter Word is a rock song with too simple chorus, the same as following one, Eon. Whereas Strangest Of Fruits is a piece mostly related with its atmosphere to artwork of the band mentioned at the beginning, Ikon. After a dark ballad, Winners, there are slightly gangster-sounding The Love Hatesong (similarly energetic as the first track on record and equally successful) and Spider Jack. The album closes with almost completely instrumental Nightshift.
I’ve decided to mention all the songs from Fun Is A Four Letter Word here to show its variety in the best possibile way and these very positively associating sounds. They say that we like what we know – one listens to this album as references to the well known, good classical, gothic rock and post punk stuff, thus it’s not difficult to start liking it from the first listening. I liked it and will come back to it with pleasure.
