The multi-platinum masterpiece "The Downward Spiral" came by it's manipulated twin, just as "Broken" EP received it's remixed supplement "Fixed" soon after it's release. It's definitely the most interesting NIN remix album, because it can successfully exist as a separate album, not just only a remix collection. For example the Charlie Clouser remixes of "Heresy" and "Ruiner" are completely new opuses, which have nothing to do with the originals. "Mr. Self Destruct" has been divided to a three part suite: "The Art Of Self Destruction, Part One" - the moody one, based on the most quiet part of the original; "Self Destruction, Part Three" - the most similar to the one from "The Downward Spital" and "Self Destruction, Final" - a complete noise massacre combined with "Eraser's" flies. There also a new version of "Eraser" - the "Denial; Realization" one was made not by just anybody. It's a masterpiece from the masters from Coil and it's psychodelic atmosphere is really similar to what they've done on the previous remix album, "Fixed". The softest track are Rick Rubin's remix of "Piggy", based on the creaky sample and jungle drums, as well as live version of "Hurt", which is apparently just the same as original and could have been omitted - as distinct from remarkable Aphex Twin's "At The Heart Of It All". It's a gloomy vision just from some industrial shipyard, played on ship hooters. We can ask, why this remix of Coil's saddest song from their debut album "Scatology" has been released on a Nine Inch Nails record. But there's nothing to cavil at, it's still a great track. "Further Down The Spiral" is a brilliant example how remix album should be like. The new interpretations of "The Downward Spiral" songs have become a new life and they are very enjoyable in isolation from the originals. It's also important to mention, that the version reviewed here is the European one (Halo 10v2). There's also an American one, which could have been remitted, because it not only lacks the awesome Charlie Clouser remixes, but also contains boring "The Beauty Of Being Numb" and "Erased, Over, Out" instead of them. But it couldn’t be, because it's the only place when we can hear the beautiful, one and a half minute long remix of "Eraser" done by Coil, called "Polite". I won't describe it here - just listen to it and find out how the remix can be different from the original.
