[SNUFF] - [SNUFF]
From time to time I am affected by a feeling of stagnation in music – old discoveries no longer enjoy, and novelties seem to be shallow and predictable. Fortunately, this condition usually does not last too long, full of desperation searching for a new spark brings effect - and such spark in my case turned out to be debut EP from Australian project [SNUFF], issued by Blind Mice Productions (who are already recognized on electro-industrial scene as Shiv-R members).
To describe this recording word "remarkable" turns out to be too weak. There are only four tracks, but supported with freshness and innovation. What is the easiest way to describe [SNUFF]? Probably the most appropriate would be to appoint them as a combination of Massive Attack and Combichrist. Mature, conscious female voice, which is undoubtedly a band’s treasure, trip-hop beat, dub, but oriented towards industrial with elements of noise, justify this term. In one word: tripdustrial.
References to artists from Bristol can be seen at a glance in "Sunday Mourning". However, it is heavier music, definitely much darker, in which black cotton changes to shiny latex. Great credit has singing, which is quite different from a typical trip-hop melancholy. Intense, powerful, but seduces just the same, at some point however, from a siren spell it transforms into a sharp cry, or rather it releases rapacity, which was hidden in it from the beginning, filled with eroticism. Layers of electronic sounds hypnotize, creating sultry, sour, narcotic atmosphere, along with loops of drums and dirty electro-industrial strengthening its obsessive character.
Even more gloom dances on a bare skin in cool and magnetic "Infatuation". Anxiety, appearing in the first industrial notes accompanies until the end. Intoxicating intro passes to moderate, pulsating beat, which against metallic, cold tones looks like a blade of knife applied to a swollen vein. Stone cold atmosphere does not destroy acid psychedelia at all, dirty bass tarnishes even more strained to the limit nerves, and female vocalist adds rape pill to the listener’s drink.
"Genesis" introduces changes in that stylistics – there is more slowly, more calmly. This is an elixir composed from Dead Can Dance, Δaimon and electro, with handfuls that derive from Orient (not only the Middle East chants in the background). It is stoned belly dancer in a disturbing performance. Ethereal is adjacent to the electric slime, multiplied reverb reinforces a sense of mysticism.
"Count the Dead" surprises, heavy industrial with elements of noise, last scene from the forbidden movie of snuff genre - the death scene. Wall of strong beats and aggressive vocal are the least worth of attention from all four, but it is not boring. The track - still unconventional - suspends for a moment and attacks again. Even in a violent release project builds atmospheric music (among others by mormorando and vocals in the background).
The duo can be recognized by all their originality. Their specific music, however, has a chance to find fans in audience of wide circles: fans of industrial, electro, trip-hop, psychedelic, alternative... When you will listen to [SNUFF], they will draw you permanently as characters from "Videodrome" by Cronenberg.
