Despite the popularity of the Chilean band Vigilante, I had the opportunity to meet them for a first time. And as it is with the first impression – it can be misleading. It was enough that I saw the cover of the latest EP, "Army of Time" and instantly I found out that it will be a tough piece of review. Once again, a post apocalyptic fuss with vocals so distorted, that just for a malicious joy I watch later the concerts, to see how a vocalist intends to repeat it live. Because it is usually ridiculous, if not pathetic.
Then I looked at a song list and I began to do the honours. Firstly - "Army Of God" in a duet with Victor Love from Dope Stars Inc., which I really like and respect. There was no disappointment, because the whole piece is in a typical of Dope Stars climate - more than 4 minutes a of pleasant, industrial beat and harsh guitar riffs.
The second in turn is a remix of the same piece made by Future Trail. It is much calmer and has female vocal braided in, that reflects like an echo Ivan’s voice. Neither a synthpop, nor the EBM and what is more an industrial. It can especially appeal to fans of lighter, more trance sounds.
And that is all, when it comes to a relax, because right after I have a chance to check how "Army of Time" goes out live. Here is another render of honour, because the power of this track turns out to be destructive and the singer keeps pace with it. The vocal is strong, does not deviate far from the original and the inserts previously sung by Victor are greatly rearranged for the Ivan’s voice.
The fourth piece is a new remix of a track released in 2010, "Prison Break", that straightforwardly associates for me with a certain serial...
But here the comparisons end. Fredrik Croon, the founder of Project Rotten, took it up really well. What we have is a dancing beat, that excellently fits to the dancefloors, guitar riffs, that are a vivid reminiscents of Dope Stars Inc. ideas, electronic inserts and even a little gothic, thanks to choirs simulated by keyboards, scrolling from time to time in the background. The whole is a genre’s masterpiece, like a jumble of what is the best on the plate, put in one track. It is a good arrange to be shown to someone as an example, what is the climate of the entire EP.
At the end the group placed "Prison Break" remixed by Yade. It was impossible for me to find a reliable information about who he is, while the piece is better (surprisingly) from those, that you can listen to his (her? their?) Myspace.
Heavily distorted vocals causes, that in total it brushes against the standards of techno music to impose a character on it. There is a beat, the power, and for me it is sometimes a solution that is invariably associated with Tiesto and such inventions. And so it is up to 2:42 minute, where it suddenly strikes firmly the ears with the industrial note, saving this piece from hitting the bottom in my eyes, to a level of a little requiring, summer hop dance in a club.
To determinate a freshly baked, dated for 2011 EP as a just something from a dark electro genre is a big simplification. Its complexity will satisfy the needs of many listeners and a composition with the performance of the individual track forms a transparent entity. Looking for EBM? Or perhaps industrial? You are drawn by a more quiet, synthpop songs? Or would you prefer still surprising solutions? Here you can find this all and even more. A deserved, high note.
