Who said that Europeans have to be pioneers in alternative music? Such opinions can be heard. Gentlemen form Godless Procession (Mexico), being aware of that opinion or not, seem to be fighting with it quite efficiently. Their CD, having the same title as the name of the group, is thought-over, well balanced and has a potential for creating an ever better material. Only the lead singer doesn't seem to be decided whether he wants to head towards opera singing or maybe a resonant, regular vocal. As a result, he seems doing both of these at the same time, which doesn't always works - the classical opera singing is usually characterised by a wide amplitude of vibrato and perfect hitting into the sounds, which cannot be observed sometimes. And if he wanted to make it "regularly" then he used to little power, too little expression... Despite of that fact the vocal, as the sound layer, is well composed with the music as a whole. It's time to get a closer look to particular songs.
Intro starts with an ambient, sound bass and vocalisation, it introduces you well into the climate of the whole CD. Mil noches welcomes us with a lively, a bit dancing rhythm, however the bass and two layers of the vocal hold us tight. When it comes to other layers of the music, they are not sophisticated - say rather simple and uncomplicated... But just in the second song the climate changes a bit, more sound spots appear, the bass remains rhythmical, but also a bit blurred. The abundance of the echo in the vocal at the very beginning can be disturbing, fortunately the group will soon get rid of it. Tracks number 3 and 4 are similar in climate, by contrast El principio is more calm, melodic, like the majority of songs in this CD. El fuego seems to be an attempt to create a music that matches exactly the text layer, that is describing the lyrics with the music.
The influence of such bands as Diary of Dreams or Bauhaus can be heard. Is it a good combination? Godless Procession seems to mix those currents quite skilfully. As the matter of fact, it is never so go that it couldn't be better but there is the consistency and the group is surely on a good path with it.
Take a closer look to Nosferatu - very clear, "nirvana-kind" bass at the beginning, bittersweet guitar melody and that vocal. That characteristic vocal which I was talking about at the beginning. Seems fit? It's the matter of taste but it surely is a characteristic feature of Godless Procession.
La espera, again, charms you with a magical, non-pushy power of the bass. This layer constitutes definitely the strongest aspect of their music. In combination with other layers it creates the power of the dark sound.
Secreto perverso speeds up the pace, the bass is literally imitating a storm... But the climate is consistent again. A bit medieval duets enhance the expression of the song.
The last proposition starts a bit pop (or at least: less alternatively), but again the well-known vocal reminds us where we are. All the previous tricks are being used. In this kind of situation questions appear: consistency or rut? Climate of lack of ideas?
Summing up: it is a good CD, in which really ambitious phenomena are sometimes being used. Many fans of many music genres can find something for themselves, at least if they can stand the opera vocal, which won't definitely suit everybody's taste. With a clear conscience I can add: it is worth trying.
