Halo Manash - Language Of Red Goats
What I'm going to review now is rather offbeat and unlike the things I usually do. Music that is full of occult implications and dark ritualistic chants, oneiric visions with the moon glowing overhead, the fluids of life, death, dreams and fantasies. Deep and regular gong beats vibrate in the rhythm of the heartbeat. Unadulterated sounds resound and reverberate through your head with their crystal clarity while you are listening to this Finnish group.
Time becomes irrelevant - instead, a chronic apathy kicks in to languorosly hang in the air while silent growls are floating around without end. There are the noises of a world cast adrift in time and space.
Language Of Red Goats is the fifth album of Halo Manash in total and the third released from Aural Hypnox. The label has also put out Se Its En (2003) and r.A.S.H.n.k.a-RA (2007). In their music one can sense a fetid air of a ritualistic ambience heavily imbued with occultism. Basically, this has been produced to the purpose of altering the state of mind and consciousness of an individual...
The three long compositions present on Language Of Red Goats aren't officially titled, instead we have three obscure passages printed on the cover... They invite you to regard them as the actual titles.
The album starts off with a 22 minute long ''Through The Gate Of Horn - Slithering Spiraling Fluttering - Shrouded Messengers Gather". Halo Manash had evidently reduced their acoustic arsenal but what did remain has been refined. There are only three acoustic instruments utilized on Language Of Red Goats, these are gongs, bells, kettledrums, a whole spectrum of wind instruments as well as recordings of bird sounds. There is no place for keys or synthetic tones here. Finns are taking the listener on a purely organic and mystical journey.
The music of Halo Manash is confined to its own hermetic world. Its trance-inducing and sublime, sufficient unto itself. The musicians paint a vibrant picture of subterranean spaces secluded from the violent daylight.
The album seems far less aggressive than the group's past releases. If you'd like to know what that means, check it out yourself...
The first track is followed by Feast On The Bitter Fluid - Flowing Through The Lips Of Her Vulgar Womb - Ingest Inebriate Initiate and Earthen Wheels Turn - Shifting Chariots Of Moon - Drawn By Red Goats. The tracks do not exactly fade out so it's not easy to tell when one ends and the other begins but I believe it can be put down as a merit, thus making Language Of Red Goats sound like a fifty minute long single.
Nevertheless the ostensible monotony is so likely to get a hold on you that you might hardly resist listening to it round the clock
Pure drones assault you from every side but changes in the sounds are subtle and rather imperceptible to the untrained ear...
Aural Hypnox has always wanted their records to be larded with details and Language Of Red Goats is a case in point. In general, Aural Hypnox usually collaborates with imaginative artist...
The album is available in a limited edition of 920 copies. The custom-made artwork it comes with - a hand-drawn symbol of mugwort - really enhances the visual effect.
Anyone familiar with the origins of the herb knows that it used to be associated with witchcraft ages ago.
To those who still haven't discovered the chaotic, austere world of ritualistic ambient, I strongly recommend Language Of Red Goats as the best introduction to the climate.
There are few acoustic-ritualistic musicians who play in similar tone - among those are Ruhr Hunter, Hati, Chaos As Shelter or Exotoendo
