Alternative that is on offer on Trip To New York's début EP is never more than the sum of well established rock tropes but this young act attempts to plug the holes in the old, cracking convention with the abundance of youthful spirit and charisma. They walk the road that has been traversed before, with destination in plain sight and footsteps of those that walked it before imprinted in the ground but the journey is moderately enjoyable and three tracks that make up Force, Despair & Confidence reverberate pleasantly if insubstantially.
German Trip To New York aims into ever crowded and ever ruthless rock mainstream defined by the emotional core of the compositions and transcendental formula of mashed up genres and trends. Inevitable comparison with some of the most successful garage rock outfits of the late 90's like VIVA's darlings- Guano Apes, stands as fitting and adequate description of band's method. Between 'Reunited' and 'Our Time' there is frankly little true difference with both tracks being reliant on the constant onslaught of dynamic guitars and streamlined structure.
There’s a potential, transpiring through segments of each song, for a musicality greater than this brief EP allows and codas of 'Reunited' and some of the guitar parts towards the climax of 'Our Time' reinforce this permuting feeling. Last offering on the EP, more melancholy inclined 'Break My Fears' diversifies the experience in a safe, predictable fashion that given right marketing might allow Trip To New York a modicum of success.
Punk vigour that this record oozes is well deserved as act's style embraces the raw energy of female vocals and angst-ridden guitars to build a ongoing momentum of each track. And while the complexity of arrangements is a victim of the dynamic pacing and the originality falls prey to blind juvenile affection for the post nu-metal sensibilities, the whole material is played honestly and confidently.
With their musical hearts on their sleeves, German Trip To New York could be on the right path and this short offering is a solid introduction to a band that beside the attitude and love of the music has a fair amount of skill that propels them forward. You will not linger over their first EP but might wonder what future holds for them if they play their cards right.
