Xotox's latest endeavour is every bit as ferocious and resonant as all of the albums that preceded it since the German act's début in 1998. With Schwanengesang Andreas Davis, band's sole member and creator hopes to celebrate the 15th anniversary of his unstoppable rhythm noise creation and he does so with aplomb, never betraying any signs of the creative fatigue despite tailoring the experience to the audience that learned to appreciate his unapologetic cacophonous sound through the past records.
Schwanengesang might indeed sound familiar but in no way does that detract from the sheer brutality of the increasingly gritty sounds that penetrate the listener's mind and body. The scope and intensity of the new music, borders on cinematic with the oppressive mood and the fluctuating blunt beat of the opening 'Kampf Um's Licht' setting the tone for the entirety of the experience.
Even with the introduction of ambient esque textures on 'Slå Tillbaka' Xotox doesn’t compromise and angst ridden vocalisation and jittery electronic passages dominate the track, effortlessly leading to titular 'Schwanengesang' that indulges all those physical instincts that respond to club oriented melodies. In Davis' hands tribal rhythms and underlying it precise structure of distorted synths make for a riveting dance floor fodder, far removed from the accessibility of EBM but no less exciting and energizing.
In later parts album opens to less rigid, impressionistic soundscapes of free flowing dirty arrangements. 'Muy Fragil' provides a delicate balance between the fragile beauty of its drown out melodies and the cracking static, while the chaotic sonic cruelty of 'Alte Muster' slowly finds its militaristic unison, in the process transforming into a hypnotic nightmarish hit.
The listener's slow descent into chaos is methodical and absorbing with meandering 'Ich-Fremd' leading to closing 'Revolution Non-Stop', a track that begins with the frivolity of digital hardcore and grows restless, until the prolonged crescendo that exhausts album's momentum.
Definitely not destined to please all of the countless industrial niches Schwanengesang nevertheless remains an exciting offer for all those listeners that wish to indulge their senses beyond the core aesthethics of the genre. Noisy and uncompromising approach of Xotox continues and with this latest offering, Andreas Davis once again finds a perfect equilibrium between the impenetrable experimentation with deafening sounds and the soul of danceable electronica. Sure you will be twitching to what sounds like the accompaniment to humanity's violent demise but isn't that one polka worth dancing?
