maQLu - Futureghosts
Vancouver noise-electro creep maQLu [aka Pyra Draculea] has just released her fourth EP, Futureghosts, on April 30, 2012, available through http://maqlu.bandcamp.com
Delving into themes of longing and loss set to mostly sparse and quivering synthetic grooves, Futureghosts also finds maQLu exploring sounds that could almost be considered traditional - strings, semi-operatic vocals, lutes, organs, and horns - brought into submission against industrial distortion, glitches, and layered drum loops.
The EP was programmed, recorded and mixed by maQLu at home and at her home away from home, a space she usually just calls "the synth cave." As with maQLu's previous three releases, Blood, Black, and Haze, the new EP was mastered by Scott Fox of Edmonton's industrial dance genius outfit iVardensphere.
maQLu's debut EP, Blood, was unleashed in April 2010, receiving airplay as far away as Australia and charting in several markets across Canada. The follow-up, Black, followed suit in October 2010 and bested its predecessor, hitting as high as #6 on!earshot’s national electronic chart in November. She has since put out a third EP, Haze, and a CD version of all three, blood.black.haze, in April 2011 as well as a 22-track experimental/improvisational/ noise album, The Maqlu Tarot, as an online-only free album in early 2011 after debuting the collection on CiTR Radio’s 24 Hours of Radio Art on January 17, 2011.
Fans have described her music as "a beautiful abomination" while reviewers have said maQLu’s music is "a breath of fresh air in the electro scene" [James Wright of Soundsphere Magazine] and "an orchestration of foreign, unsettling industrial rock" [Tom Harrison of The Province].
maQLu is also working on a second 2012 EP, scheduled for release just in time for the long dreary winter months.
