Andrea "Nebelhexë" Haugen (Samotha from Emperor's ex-wife) and Tanja "Nachthexe" Stene (Fenriz from Darkthrone's wife) form norwegian duet Aghast. Their only LP Hexerei im Zwielicht der Finsternis is so charming thanks to the synthesizers which modify their voices and make them sound older.
Hexerei im Zwielicht der Finsternis was released in 1995 and I go back to it very often. It is really addicting. Some moments give me goose bumps.
Intro is perfect for an opening of a horror film. The sounds rise. The adventage of this is that intro changes into the following track swimmingly: Sacrifice – the best song of album. Sacrifice lets you imagine a walk across the thick, toxic mist. It consists of quite enigmatic tones – everythig looks fuzzy and obscured... Calls resemble ghostly sounds. The track introduces the following pieces of the album really well,
Enter the Hall of Ice is filled by sorrow and feeling of being lost. Regular repeating motives hipnotise and allow us to focus on "words" sang by these ladies.
During the third track you can grow tired. Call from the Grave is like a hoary old chestnut. Laments and callings do-not-know-what-powers starts to get boring.
Totentanz is a bit out of the previous rules. Ladies decided to change the instruments in this song. What a surprise. However penetrating sounds of laugh, scream and moan circulate somewhere.
The Darkest Desire could make you fall you asleep. It sinks you into the oniric abyss. However Das Irrlicht seem like a dark ambient with voices of witches. It's quite an interesting track though.
I can say the same about outro as about intro – it's great for a horror film soundtrack.
The whole album really likes to repeat itself – there's no dynamics besides vocals which wakes you up from dullness from time to time.
It all depends on your taste. Fans of sinister and occult tunes will be satisfied. Guaranteed decerebration.
