In the scene that can't complain about the lack of enthusiasm from newcomers and débutantes, it is a prevalent sin committed by many- their reliance on prevailing clichés of the industrial form and loyalty to the ersatz forms of past concepts. Within the pattern of the ongoing tributes to those templates Biomechanical brings to life their first EP that clearly demonstrates act's devotion and understanding of the popular trends but not necessarily their need to transcend them.
As if some very personal demons where exorcised in the course of the unpleasantly rough track that is 'Broken Wings' listener can justifiably contest the ragged, jittery production that makes its running time an endurance test, despite the solid hook and the blunt oomz of the industrial energy. In the meantime vocal work echoes some of the most obvious standards of the genre, the caustic angry syllables protruding from behind the dense construct of heavy EBM beats and militaristic rhythm.
Different in both tones and tempo is titular 'Renegade 2.0' that injects into the mix the break neck paced spirit of crisp, dance floor destined electronica. If not for the angst-ridden vocalisation that carries over from the opening track, Biomechanical's manifesto could easily be confused with the electro mainstream. Two remixes bring interesting formulas to the table, changing the mood of the track drastically. Telemark adds the aggressive assault of guitars but preserves the riveting essence of the track while simultaneously toying with the order of lyrics and crescendos. Equally thoughtful is effort from Italian WormZ that creatively and expertly reinvent track's hook and use it to build up a staggering and massive, exploding finale.
Third original track from Biomechanical- 'The Stars Are Wrong' is a similarly paced mix of blaring synths and energetic club friendly beats although not as memorable as previous compositions and rather monotone in its consistent pacing.
There certainly is an atom of hope for the evolution of Biomechanical into fully fleshed out and original entity. More than that, the hints of thoughtful instrumentations and the careful choice of accompanying remix acts shows that the brainchild of Matthew L. Simpson, clearly nurtured in the the same creative currents from which bands like Uberbyte or XP8 emerged, has hidden depths that are yet to manifest themselves. Renegade 2.0 is solid but hopefully only a teaser for much braver and more adventurous records.
