While launching The Swarm released by NoiTekk, as a man acquainted with hundreds of publications under the sign of dark electro, I was expecting a typical, electronic ride. I was right.
The opening Abbra Cadaver immediately implies, that in the Canadians publishing there is no need to look for some dance hits. The guys put on a slow pace, characteristic for dark electro, heavily distorted vocal and climatic melodic line. The first impression is not bad.
While listening For Katherine, come to mind sounds created by Frontline Assembly on the occasion of Hard Wired release or melodies played in the vast vacuum of Die Sektor. Gentlemen from DYM have good patterns. Perfect tone at the end of a tiring day.
Turning to Right to Fall at the beginning it seems to be heavily rhythmic, almost familiar. You can hear a strong similarity to the sounds of Tactical Sekt. An explicit rhythm section and even marching pace, cause an inflow of tasty testosterone. Unfortunately, vocal is too overloaded, illegible, and the melody gives way to harsh crackling, that at the end gets boring. Piece as a whole is not very clear. It is an average one.
Another track titled WMD is the most characteristic number on the disc. Only here the breakcore tendency of En and Arc can be plainly heard. Sounds are drilling in the ears entering into a state of strange trance. Track may seem raw and devoid of post-production, but that is the assumption. The end result is at least interesting but in my humble opinion, hard to consume.
Penultimate piece at the first part of the album - Lude, once again associates with the Tactical Sekt. Highly distorted bass and loud drums work well with a distinct, yet simple melody. Whole, again, does not draw. There is no "bonkers".
Inclined in vivid ebm the disc is closed by the title one The Swarm. Listening it more, come to mind sounds of DavaNTage and Accessory - mighty march, perfect for the dance floor. I may remember that piece for longer.
The second part of The Swarm is a previous record of Canadians titled The Invalid, remixed in whole by well known formations under the sign of dark electro. Sincere Trade offers us a breakcore driving pleasure based on sampled and twisted melodies. Remix Premptive Strike 0.1 is a piece, that may entertain on dance floors. Feet themselves stamp the dance rhythm. Die Sektor by creating its own version of Autonomy, invites you to severe, nostalgic, rhythmic trance. Aside of outstanding with nothing remix performed by CompUterus we get to the track Touch took to the workshop by the guys from the Mexican C-Lekktor. Deep bass, steady pace and apocalypse hanging over the listener will bring in a good mood every fan of dark electro. It is definitely worth returning to it.
After a moody Touch, the new iteration of Martha Monoxcide wakes up with a fast pace and a strong rhythm section. Then the release slows once again.
Remix Encephalon does not catch the attention. Amduscia reviewing piece The Invalid did it without excessive passion. Veterans of the scene using their usual tricks created the familiar "strobe hit", which will inevitably perish in the flood of other songs that are similar to it. I recommend it only to strongly fasted fans.
Closing track The Swarm in a good remix of Fracture is a decent outro. Melody easily played by a synthetic orchestra, interspersed with a roaring vocal, nicely mutes. Unfortunately, once again comes a feeling of dissatisfaction. Something is missing.
The album should be assessed as typical average one, because of high competition in the dark electro scene and the lack of even one characteristic, dance floor stunner, will not become a hit. We will see what the gentlemen from DYM will present in the future.
