Alchemia Club is situated in Cracow’s Kazimierz. The decor of the place is quite specific and is supposed to resemble alchemist’s laboratory, the rooms are airless and dark and to get from one room to another you have to go through old wardrobe. Actually in that evening it resembled slightly destroyed seat of black characters and this impression was magnified by mist and cold outside.
On 15th November a very interesting event took place in here, namely the concert of Hetane and The Gentle Art Of Cooking People, which gathered quite a lot of fans. Concerts in Alchemia take place in the basement but before it was possible to go down we had to wait for about half an hour because of the delay. Well, it is said that waiting is the best part always.
Firstly, The Gentle Art. Of Cooking People. Interestingly, the project is instrumental only. Resigning from the vocal at first seemed to me quite courageous and risky but actually soon it came out that it works. The band presented deep and multi-layered compositions, psychedelic, sometimes melodious, sometimes straight from the far away galaxy but harsh and aggressive as well. The music was interesting, surprising, evoking energy and drawing in, creating tension and anticipation what a following sound brings. It is this kind of music which involves focusing. Maybe that’s why part of the audience was listening to the concert sitting on the floor. The only disadvantage of lack of vocalist was poor contact with the audience.
After about an hour long performance there was a break and then the stage belonged to the musicians from Hetane completely. The music of Hetane charms, thickens the atmosphere, makes the air vibrate and the vocal abilities of Magda Oleś surprise each time with the same power. Unique and intriguing timbre of vocalist’s voice and choosing sounds which almost loops around the listeners’ necks make this music unbelievably and hypnotizingly powerful and there is no way to resist and to free yourself from those sounds. This time, however, something was missing, something like cohesion, concentration, it’s hard to say, maybe it was because of the quite high temperature in the room. We could hear well-known tracks such as Monopoly, Nienawidzimy, the title track from the first album Machines or Ken ke lai, which started Hetane’s career, but there were also new tracks from the forthcoming album, among the others there was Golden Snakes promoting the new release. There was an encore but the band didn’t play Wild Woman, the song which the audience loudly demanded. All in all, the concert may be considered as successful and the music of both bands as worth recommendation.
