Hørd, the sonic project of French videographer, singer, and electronic alchemist Sébastien Carl, pulls you into a universe that feels part movie, part fever dream. His background in visual arts seeps into his music, crafting soundscapes that are as immersive as they are haunting. With layers of icy synths, ghostly echoes, and a gritty urban vibe, Carl flirts with gothic/darkwave aesthetics while weaving in post-punk, EBM, shoegaze, and techno influences—creating something that feels both nostalgic and ahead of its time.
"Spiders," from thNebula Aranea #3 compilation (BELLA URSA LABEL), dropped on October 5th, and while it’s not brand-new, it’s an absolutely killer way to dive into Hørd’s sonic world—just like I did. The track hits all the marks of his signature style, blending melancholy with pulse-pounding energy. Giallo Disco once called Hørd’s music "reverb-soaked urban-gothic melancholic songs, between synth-shoegaze and violent EBM," and Spiders is exactly that: a beautiful storm of sounds, both hypnotic and raw.
The track opens with a slow build, synths swirling like mist down a dark city street, and then, around the three-minute mark, it explodes into something much bigger. Huge, cinematic waves of sound crash in, pulling you deeper into its atmosphere. It’s like Carl is painting with sound, turning emotions into a vivid sonic landscape. Listening to Spiders feels like walking through a dream—one part beautiful, one part eerie, but 100% captivating.
Since 2014, Hørd’s been taking his fog-drenched vibes from Italy to Russia, entrancing crowds with his brooding, hypnotic energy. His album Focus on Light has earned comparisons to Pornography-era The Cure, Joy Division, and early Nine Inch Nails—which pretty much tells you all you need to know about the intensity of his sound.
With Spiders, Hørd delivers that same intensity: a balance of introspection and a haunting, danceable beat. It’s cinematic, dark, and pulls you in like a spell. This track has all the layers—moody, driving, and epic—showing off Carl’s talent for blending genres and bending sound into something uniquely his. It’s the kind of music that feels expansive yet hits you on a deeply personal level.
If, like me, this track is your first step into Hørd’s world, it’s the perfect starting point to dive into his discography. I’m definitely going to keep exploring his work this weekend, and trust me, if you’re into post-punk, darkwave, or techno, Hørd is someone you won’t want to miss.
