Inkubus Sukkubus is a main representative of British gothic rock from the nineties. The band was founded in 1988 as ‘Bela Knapp,’ but soon it was changed into the pagan band ‘Children of the Moon.’ Under this name they released their first album ‘Beltaine.’ The present name of the band has functioned since 1991, though at the beginning it was written as ‘Incubus Succubus.’ In Poland they are rather unknown.
The "Dark Goddess" seems to be everything what is expected from a gothic/pagan rock band. It was released on 7th November 2010 with a little delay caused by the mistake during the process of printing the cover – it came out that the picture is too dark than it was supposed to be.
From the very beginning the harmonious relation between Candia McKormack’s voice in the middle parts of the songs and the music by Tony McKormack and Bob Gardener is heard. The subject matter of the songs is death, sex and love – obviously it is love that wins, which becomes evident in the most dynamic song – "Kissed by Eros," based on the Psyche and Eros myth. There are also some references to Lilith and Devil in some other lyrics while "Hammer of the Witches" invokes the motif lately reappearing in their compositions, namely the burning of the witches at the stake by Catholic priests.
"Bacchanalia" is about passion and desire as well as heavenly vision of love.
The songs on this album are clearly distinguishable, in each of them there are layers and motifs complementing each other. None of the songs competes with the others and altogether they create their unique atmosphere. What’s more, having control over the material in the way the members of Inkubus Sukkubus do, graces the album and emphasises the professionalism of the given band.
