So the mind.area is back... The question is: why?
It was a long time since I last heard such repeated, boring and headache-giving music as the one we can hear from mind.area on the CD Maze. Whatever they want to show us, we have already heard it all in thousands of similar songs... There is few things to stop on and listen - no special power, no feeling, no fancy music spectra or even something to dance, not to mention lyrics... It seems that musicians from mind.area didn't exactly know what they wanted to do when starting the Maze project. And it seems that they didn't get to know it till the last minute of the final track.
For example the first song, Destiny. Light beats, standard pace and that lyrics... Wanna be wanna be wanna be yoooour... destiny! What a shame that they didn't add baby baby baby oooouh. Was it supposed to be romantic? OK, even dark electro might be somehow romantic, but in a much more... strong, distinctive way, both in music and lyrics.
It is difficult to imagine a place where the CD could be played. A club? Too weak. A bar? Well, maybe. Preferably the one that serves coffee and cakes, non-pushy and quiet. A concert? Waste of time and money. All sounds the same here. Schematic, not really melodic, not even moving (not to mention the fact that you sometimes wish the music pulled you by your hair and threw onto the closest wall).
It is difficult to determine the inspiration for mind.area music. It seems that they took no more than 20% from each music genre and mixed them in the worst possible proportions. In Proclamation they seemed to smuggle something interesting (timbre spots vs. beats), but yet they do it extremely unskillfully, because neither the first one nor the second one is there. And are you ready, are you ready all the time... Yes, I am ready to stop this CD and put it in the darkest corner of my room, but I can't until I deal with it till the very end.
Behind The Horizon is so gentle, so... like the rest. Nothing to listen to. Later Lowdown, featuring Reizstrom, from which you could expect something interesting... in vain? Not necessarily, although this is also not an extremely griping song.
Insane was promising well, a bit dark, but then the harmony turned major and the ambiance went down the tube.
Existence was apparently aspiring to be a dance track and in some way it is one - but again, somewhere in the middle come timbre spots and you are not able to dance to that, and a moment later we get some trashy beats.
Faces and Beauty don’t bring anything new to what we heard earlier, BUT...
There may be a light in the tunnel! Here’s Blacklash which can be the leader on this CD. It has heavier beats, distinctive melodic line, the atmosphere is consistent... This is so far the strongest position on the CD, the most consistent and reasonable one.
Next we have Slow and... it is difficult to believe our ears, the consistency is there! Well, in a bit different style but it turns out to be better. There is feeling, there is coherence. Heeey, gentlemen, couldn’t you start just like that?
The last three songs are unfortunately more similar to previous ones, but fortunately they don’t spoil the reception. Deadlock seems to be a good closing of the Maze project, it more or less sums up what we could hear so far – with all the ups and downs.
Maze evokes mixed feelings. On the one hand, it is repeated and boring, on the other hand, it has some parts that are worth attention... I don’t know, however, if you could recommend it to genre-lovers. But on the other hand again... someone conceived it, recorded it, paid for it, had a vision and willingness to do it. Putting aside the final effect (if we can dare to do that), the work put into the creation of the CD is great and very important.
Nevertheless, you must watch out not to evoke in yourselves one of the most undesirable feelings – the feeling of wasting your time.
