There is always this little uncertainty and worry when your favourite band releases a new album. It was no different this time, especially since they did two videos beforehand – for "Lickanthrope" and "White Skies". Two songs that musically are completely different.
I’ve been listening to Moonspell’s new 2CD work for three days now. And first thing I can tell for sure is that songs from "Alpha Noir" and "Omega White" are easily distinguishable with their musical features.
"Alpha Noir"
Moonspell in it’s best heavy metal condition with gloomy lyrics. Lots of guitars, rumbling drums, growling. Raw music with occasional whispering or singing but everything continuing on the band’s most extreme sounds. Powerful. Energy charge.
Highlights of the album: drums lines in "Axis Mundi", "Em Nome Do Medo" with dramatic lyrics in Portuguese, and operatically instrumental "Sine Missione".
Track list:
01. Axis Mundi
02. Licanthrope
03. Versus
04. Alpha Noir
05. Em Nome Do Medo
06. Opera Carne
07. Live Is Blasphemy
08. Grandstand
09. Sine Missione
"Omega White"
Moonspell played, in their quite a long history, in a few different styles. Experimenting with the heaviest music genres, adding electronic sounds, melodically singing. And this album, really surprisingly, uncovers yet another side of the story. Even though guitar riffs and clear drums are still there it carries a huge emotional value. Touching lyrics mix with vampiric verses, calm melodies join whispers and a clear voice is complemented with female chorus. Audible keyboards add to the final result.
My first impression for some songs was: Type O Negative and here we have "New Tears Eve" dedicated in loving memory of Peter Steele.
My absolute favourites: gothically rocking "White Skies", "Herodisiac" for the enchanting chorus and "A Greater Darkness" as a whole bass-vibrating, sang low emotional bomb.
Track list:
01. Whiteomenga
02. White Skies
03. Fireseason
04. New Tears Eve
05. Herodisiac
06. Incantatrix
07. Sacrificial
08. A Greater Darkness
