So it is... After waiting almost year and a half for a new full-length album from the German group Phosgore here comes – "Warhead". Need for a powerful impact is satisfied, and the Germans breathe. However, are you sure that with relief?
The album opens with an intro entitled "The Beginning Of The End" - disturbing but gentle rasp, which is applied with the sound of Geiger counter. Trivial? Perhaps, however, looking at past achievements of Phosgore it is an excellent preview of material contained on the album. Introduction to contamination, in which we go extremely smoothly. After this brief introduction begins "VX" track calmly. But let us not be fooled – before storm there is always silence. So that is how it is in this case, after calm moment to our ears start to reach strong beat preceded and confused initially by alarm. Needless to say nicely differentiated. Quiet and powerful moments are carefully balanced in the track which created interesting and perfectly blending into style of Phosgore mixture. Next on the list is a bit ascetic, although not deprived of a decent dose of energy "Glasgow Smiling". Slower than its predecessor but not worse. Great differentiation at rate does not interfere, introduces the atmosphere and makes you want to discover other secrets of "Warhead". And so it is with "Contagion". Excellent samples with a variety of beats are easily ear-catching. Next track aptly named "Fuck You", in turn from the very beginning provides a good dose of energy. Faster than its predecessor, not monotonous, very consistent and encouraging for further listening. Very neatly goes into track no.6, "Multilator". It blends slightly with its predecessor, but you cannot blame it for something else. I do not hide, however, that there is more happening from the middle of track. Another composition is "Detonate Devastate Annihilate". Beginning announces next dose of experience, but in time it begins to remind us two previous tracks. It is a real downside, but after another listening we can see a lot of potential. But it is the nest track, "Bloodbath", that brings the awaited breath of fresh air. Despite slowing pace juicy strikes wake us up and prepare for next position in the tracklist - "20 Ways To Kill Someone," one of the strongest points in the whole album. Energetic, very diverse piece is perfect to madness on the dance floor. Like coming next "Panzerfaust Schiessen" - with a little note that I think it is the most powerful point on "Warhead". Very fast, very strong and very aggressive – we just waited for something like that listening to Phosgore’s new release. The next track, "Demon Core" also meets all the criteria of a club hit - listening to it is hard not to stamp your foot with the rhythm. The penultimate track on the album is titled "Into the Void". It brings some respite after previous dynamic pieces. It slows down, however, it is incredibly atmospheric and really good constructed. It passes into outro, which is a great bracket for the entire album.
Therefore, I will return to the question posed at the beginning, whether Phosgore can breathe with a sigh of relief? In my opinion, one hundred percent right. On the album there are very expressive elements and strong, but there are also weaker points, but so it must be. Despite this, I think the whole is very consistent and meets the requirements for the album. I was not disappointed listening to "Warhead". Very nicely embraced compositionally album, thoughtful, and containing tracks to listen to as well as to dance. On the album is present climate, and the power which many people are looking for. Despite sometimes there is creeping up monotony the whole is quite dynamic and carrying considerable energy charge. I recommend it to any fan and to those who just acquaint with the work of neighbors from the western border.
