Someone once said that writing about music is like dancing about architecture. Maybe it’s wise on the one hand but on the other hand this statement is slightly overused by people who don’t have much to say or write. I’ve decided to learn the truth on my own. Well...I’m not going to discourse at The Palace of Culture and Science or perform pas de deux with some charming female journalist about Beauvais Cathedral but I won’t refrain myself from quoting another wise sentence which is much more familiar to me – "music is architecture in movement". I think about this truth whenever I listen to the album "Imperative" made by Polish project called Sect.Each time I discover brilliant solutions in the construction of this album, unusually arranged tracks with taste, frequents tempo’s changes, twists and varieties which make me think of admiring and unravelling of the beauty turned into walls. Like mentioned earlier cathedral in Beauvais. Monumental and delicate at the same time, overwhelming and ethereal, with solid foundation but inevitably going to an insane final. If you ever happen to have an opportunity, get inside Beauvais Cathedral with "Imperative" in your headphones. I guarantee that goose pimples will rip your clothes and your souls will fly out from the body and lift to the surrounding of vault...I’m following Łukasz’s achievements from the beginning. To be perfectly frank, each piece of his artistic work made an impression on me but undoubtedly "Imperative" deserves a special attention. I have the personal satisfaction from the fact that the masterpiece has been immortalized for future generations thanks to the Rage In Eden Records:-). Let’s hope for more such tones, more such sounds, more choir’s powers. Currently available tools for musicians are better, more precise and accurate. It’s wonderful because it enables the young independent artists, such as Łukasz Maj, to create so deep and refined compositions in which the emotional power, without any exaggeration, is comparable to the best records done by The Protagonist, Sophia or Predella Avant. I’ve wondered how "Imperative" would sound as recorded with an accompaniment of varied sounds and stylistic means. Perhaps it will do fragmentarily but in such a manner it is composed, with the varieties used by Łukasz as well as the power of orchestral arrangements it remains unrivalled. Of course, those who seek thrill will also search for signs of correlation between music and architecture, for instance antiphonal singing in churches or Venetian topophony from St Mark’s Basilica but what for? You’d better listen to Sect and discover another surface. It’s core is expressed in the quotations of J.J. Rousseau which is printed on the coverage of the album meaning that the civilization sets human beings against each other.
