The Fallacy is a band with relatively small artistic output, which in fact consists of two albums. Released in 2009 "Falling Roses" and "Beyond the Mist" from 2010.
Reviewed "Beyond the Mist" is not precisely defined by the band itself. Neither gothic, nor dark wave, and metal is present here as well.
It’s hard not to agree with them – the whole album is a masterpiece from borderline. Piano parts, recorded by session musician, in my opinion are similar to those of early Artrosis. However, dynamic guitar and drums, suggesting something like metal, are added to it. Yet, suddenly, dark wave elements appear and when I listened to "Criterion" and I heard something like The Cure – I was taken aback completely. Also two kinds of vocals need to be mentioned: Angie Bernini and Marco Cusato. Vocals are also mixing and joining different genres. Angi most often sings like Inkubus Sukkubus and Lacuna Coil (consciously or not), sometimes we hear choral duet with Marco (Theatre of Tragedy?) and sometimes only him himself (and his voice is really deep).
But who likes such a hotch-potch? For example I do, but in this case it’s really a poor one. The biggest minus here is for very simple guitars. Do not expect any finesse or stunning solo parts. The ones from "Before we leave" are maximum of possibilities. Most often it looks like that: the guitarists (there are two of them) find a short motif and monotonously play it for most of the time of the given song. It’s quite insufficient for me since it’s a band realising full-length album.
Drums are clearly automatic and I don’t like it. Since the band can take session musician to play it, they also can have one when recording album, supposing that they consider playing seriously.
Next one is bas. Bas is apparently ok, when you finally hear it because basically it’s hard to hear it because of the guitars. Only when they are silent it’s possible to hear a little solo.
Now it’s time for praising. And the pianist deserves to be praised. She? He? Nobody knows, but skilfully intertwined piano parts make the whole music finer. Without them the simplicity of form would kill. What also must be mentioned is that the piano parts are diverse in contrast to guitars.
And now time for vocals. Angi is my favourite. As I have already mentioned – her singing may easily be compared to the particular bands, but she isn’t insistently copying anyone, she’s only modelling herself upon some patterns. Nice timbre, proper English and very interesting ideas concerning melodies e.g. in "Treshold of Light".
And on the basis of the same song it’s possible to enumerate Marco’s vocal faults. English – in many places dramatically distorted by wrong accent and pronunciation. It’s easy to push low vocal into your throat and hum just as Marco did. And the worst sin is exactly "Treshold..." in which terrible effect is added to the vocals ruining the already badly sung verses even more. Chorus, complicated, perfect and very well sung by Angi is also damaged by the second vocalist.
Not to make it so bad – the following "Mechanic" with Marco’s voice sounds nicely, moonspell-like, if only he gets higher parts to sing. So, what’s necessary is to practise, practise and once again – practise, because there is a great deal of potential, but used rather unskilfully.
For whom the album is, with twelve songs, completely mixed when it comes to genres? Surely for the fans of gothic metal, because the band is very close to it. And for those who like really gothic, sublime female vocals. Also for maniacs looking for something new. Personally, I wish for the band one particular genre, made perfect by them instead of a little bit of everything performed with 50%-70% of possibilities. I’m eager to listen to the next album.
