Being a fan of the works of Lovecraft I cannot just pass by anything that relates to a loner from Providence even to a small extent, while simultaneously keeping in mind the picture of what I expect such a piece to look like. The strategy might appear risky as one can easily drift away from the proper point of view of a particular author. Such a situation occured with an album named 'Nyarlathotep’ and EP 'From Beyond', which I have had quite a musical excursion with, and which I am still in two minds about even to this day, in some way. Subjectively, while listening to the music inspired by Cthulhu, I expect ambient as dark and morose as the very depths of the abyss of sea, in which an entity with tentacles, immersed in somewhat a lethargy, has been residing awaiting brigther days to come. And that is how we get to the core of the issue as everyhting that Flint Glass offers does include dark ambient elements, but they only constitute a part of the whole. Gwenn Trémorin adds to this particular musical amagalm a great of deal of electronica from trance and EBM related sounds, which unluckily results in nothing similar to the atmosphere of the stories of Mr. L. Truth be told, one can argue that such an approach to the issue by all means collaborates with the idea of "cosmic horror", yet such solutions do not appeal to me. Fortunately, the record has its bright (or rather dark?) points, hallmarks, which the introductory piece ('Rlyeh La Morte’) can be included in; the piece that, to my point of view, should mark the overall sound of the album. In this track, the darkness of ambient intermingles with tribal samples, creating an atmosphere of anxiety and mystery, which comprise standard elements famous for the stories about Cthulhu & Co. "Brain Speaking Machine" makes another interesting piece, which, much as it suits the atmosphere of the record (gentle introduction, energetic ending), it is quiet ear-pleasing. Also, half-a-minute fill-ups, separating each of the eight longer pieces, can constitute advantages, even surpassing these tracks with their specific atmosphere.
And how are the thins with "From Beyond"? Seven pieces based on the comopsitional rule 'ambient intro, electro/trance middle and ending', which is much more in comparison to what offered 'Nyarlathotep’.
I do not exude much enthusiasm over Flint Glass' musical solutions, yet I assume that there are some people out there who will appreciate the music of this French artist. I give up.
