Reznor used to give us a remix album after every regular one (except the debut "Pretty Hate Machine"). Thus there's nothing weird in the fact, that year after "The Fragile" we get it's remix twin. Unfortunately, it's nothing like the previous ones - there's no sickness of "Fixed", nor turned upside down versions of the original songs, like on "Further Down The Spiral".. We get some premiere stuff though, which is the most interesting on this album. The opening track "Slipping Away" is a compilation of the rejected parts of the original, 9 minutes long version of "Into The Void". Without funky sound of the "The Fragile" incarnation, with the verse "I keep slipping away" repeated. "The Great Collapse" is a very poor version of "The Wretched", although it's still better than the proper remix of that track - "The Wretched (Version)" - with unnecessary techno beats. "10 Miles High" is an outtake from "The Fragile" sessions, which was previously available on the vinyl release only (there was also a short fragment of it hidden on the regular CD version). The last completely new song is Gary Numan's cover "Metal". Better late than never, especially that Reznor and Numan have a lot in common. Trent's version is less "robotic" and longer, but it's very close to the original - only the closing part is really interesting. Let's see what do we get in the remix part of the album. "The Frail (Version)" gets a string quartet and various noises, instead of the piano theme. "Where Is Everybody?" was slowed down and enriched with more ambient beat with the chorus speeded up. It's one of the most intriguing tracks on "Things Falling Apart". But releasing three remixes of "Starfuckers, Inc." was completely useless. Even the original song is far from splendor and those new versions are only nails (not nine inch) in it's coffin. The Adrian Sherwood's one, on position 4 (there's no other way to distinguish them - all have the same title) is a looped riff from the original, mixed with some annoying hooter and constantly repeated "Starfuckers!". Mix from position six, made by legendary Dave Ogilvie, has an interesting beginning - the disco intro reminds of Skinny Puppy's first albums. Unfortunately, Dave has apparently no idea for the rest of it, although it's still good that there is no "Starfuckers!" loop in this remix. The last one was done by Charlie Clouser and it's the heaviest track on the album. It starts very quietly - with the slow part of the original - but it quickly gets louder and change into a real sonic massacre. It could be not possible to listen to it with ears not used to sounds like this. And this applies to the whole "Things Falling Apart". I recommend this album to the die hard fans only. New NIN listeners won't find anything interesting here.
