Theatres des Vampires is an Italian band playing gothic metal combined with electronics. Throughout the years the band’s make-up has been changing noticeably, and, along with the members, the music they played. Beginnings of the Project is a melodic black metal, which strongly differs from the stylistics of "Anima Noir" album...
"Amina Noir" was released in 2008. The fans have been waiting impatiently for this piece. From the very first sounds it driver us into vampiric atmoshere. Original vocal of Sonya Scarlet since the first song ("Kain") lets itself be remebered. The vocalist is gifted with a voice of provocative, naughty girl, so strongly characteristic, that from the first moment one can either love her or hate her.
"Unspoken Words" is the second track on the album. Pleasant, melodic, of the more delicate ones, however, it doesn’t stand out with anything in particular.
"Rain" is a cover of the legendary group, The Cult. Played powerfully, dynamic, definitely filled up with electronics. Well-defined keyboards surely added character to Theatres des Vampires’s version. It is definitely one of the best pieces on this record.
"Dust" is next, nice, melodic song, unfortunately such little characteristic that after having listened to it a few times it still doesn’t draw any attention... It firmly lacks some stronger accent which would let it be remembered.
In the middle of the album I’ve finally waited a ballad. Calm sounds, delicate opera vocal in chorus, subdued stanzas and all pretty well composed into a whole – in this way you can shortly describe "From The Deep". A beautiful song at the ideal position on the record, it allow for a while of rest from stronger fragments.
After a moment I come back to the classic tempo of the album. "Blood Addiction" is the next song that is not so easily commited to memory. Though it has some supremacy. It is a masculine voice accompaning Sonya’s. Moans and shouts combine together pretty well.
"Butterfly" also presents masculine vocal. Yet here it does much better. It’s nice to listen to such well harmonious duo.
In the next song we already hear fullness of Sonya’s voice. The piece "Wherever You Are" is a successful combination of electronics with guitars and powerful characteristic vocals.
"Two Seconds" is definitely the most dynamic track on the record. Decided and just bursting with electronics. From the very first tacts it strikes with fast tempo.
The album closes with the title song, "Anima Noir". Peaceful, low-key sounds, choirs and high, opera vocals take into vampiric world. The stanzas spoken by Sonya complete the atmosphere. A beautiful song, beautiful for the ending and for representing the album.
"Anima Noir" is very melodic and harmonious connection of guitars and electronics. Dark sounds filled up with simple choruses and lyrics easily catch one’s ear. Although most songs is stylistically similar, you can easily pick up from the album such pearls as "Anima Noir", "Wherever You Are", "Two Seconds" or the cover "Rain".
I will surely come back to this album a few times.
