The Downward Spiral was conceived in 1994. This is a magical date for
many as many things happened that year. Death of Kurt Cobain of Nirvana,
as well as Ryszard Riedl of Dżem are just a few events that characterize
the impetuous quality of that time. In the background of the mentioned
events the album by NIN "The Downward Spiral" was released. The album
was recorded in the rented villa in Bel Air where in 1969 Charles
Manson's gang killed  some people among whom there was Roman Polański's
wife - Sharon  Tate. It's possible that the maddness of the place
influenced the whole album.

The effects came soon afterwards. NIN presented us with the album of an
aggressive way of expression. It was an amazing musical madness. The
sounds combined here show and teach how to use electronics anew.
"Mr.Self Destruct" -  is the harsh start to remain so to the end. Hectic
rhythm, samples, the sounds of tinware, keyboards, guitars and synthetic
rhythmic background plus piled, over-steered voices make a mixture that
drowns you in the enormous amounts of emotions. Adrian Belew of King
Crimson played the guitar.

I was pressed in by the dynamics of the CD. There were few moments to
catch one's breath, still there are some: "A Warm Place","Hurt","Piggy".
There is very little space on the CD and even if we find some its damp,
hypnotic, thick. Energetic track "March of the pigs" is simple, though
absorbing to the verge of madness. The whole is nicely supplemented by
wonderful video clips. Well-done. Professional.

Generally speaking, it's worth to recollect what the band did on
Woodstock Festival 1994.Bedraggled, immersed in the magical idea they
started the industrial madness. Trent, the shaman in the mud did his
best. The band's show - unbelievable, perhaps that directed in advance –
together with the tracks of  The Downward Spiral CD heated the
atmosphere to the maximum.

The CD is good, but it's not my favourite, still when I want to brawl
that's the one.
