10.12.2011 - Orto Bar, Ljubljana
Torul is an eletronic music act from Ljubljana, Slovenia. In 2011 they already released two singles ("Try", "In Whole") and the album "In Whole" two weeks ago.
On December 10th 2011 Torul gave a concert in Orto Bar, one of the main venues for rock music in Ljubljana. The tickets were available at the bar downstairs for 5 Euros. The action didn't start on time (22:00), so we got us some wine, which later a friend of mine almost spilled over the grim security guy in charge of ticket control in front of the entrance to the club upstairs.
The doors are next to the stage, the concert already commenced, the crowd was staring at us. We quickly tried to find a good place in the centre front. Three people on the stage, Torul, the mastermind himself, the least noticeable, several computer devices hiding him from the audience. To Torul's right, the good-spirited bassist/guitarist/keyboarder. Some of my friends labelled the singer "The Joker", because on previous concerts he was grinning all the time (considering the darker lyrics, they found is somewhat strange). This time his gestures were more reserved.
The opening song was their previous single "Try", accompanied by the official video projected on a screen behind the musicians. In the next hour they proceeded to play nearly all of their repertoire. With "Show Me Your City" and the depechemod-ish "If You So Wish" they managed to bring me back to the 80's, and I felt a little bit nostalgic, while "In Whole" surprisingly didn't kick my ass as much as I thought it would.
All in all the concert in Orto Bar wasn't bad, but I have to admit that the atmosphere at their concert in the club Menza pri Koritu a few months ago was better for some reason. Maybe because the stage in Menza was bigger or perhaps there were more people. But the thing I noticed the most (and which was kind of annoying) was the passivity of the crowd in Orto Bar. Torul make danceable music, however, the majority of the audience seemed to perceive it as a cultural event and were just standing there like frozen flowers. Their choice.
